Just came across this thread... many very cool lists already mentioned. I was reminded of some forgotten gems.

My list:

The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Star Control 2 (3DO/PC)
Command and Conquer: Red Alert (PC)
Wing Commander 3 (3DO/PC)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS)
Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete (PS)
Fallout 3 (PS3)
Portal 2 (PC)

Runners up: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Bros 3, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Bioshock, Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed 2

I originally had more modern games in there, but had to make space for the classics. Some of my more choices may not have been the "best" games in retrospect, but I tried to focus on games that I spent the most time playing growing up and had the biggest impact on me at the time.

Top 10 you say? This will be very difficult...

No order and off the top of my head. I also took time playing them into account. I have cheated a bit here in a way

Elite (Spectrum/Amiga)
Chaos (Spectrum)
UFO Enemy Unknown (Amiga/PC)
Fallout New Vegas (Xbox 360)
Halo (Xbox)
Football Manager (and its predecessor Championship Manager) (PC)
Civilization (all of them!) (Amiga/PC)
Lock 'n' Chase (Intellivision)
Mame (PC)
Dropzone (Atari 800XL)

To do this justice Id probably need a list more like 100!

Youll note the lack of Playstation/SNES/Megadrive games here - its not that I didnt play them, just none of them got near the top 10. SNES Final Fight and SF2 Turbo would be in the top 20 though!
Is there food?

I'm running this monkey farm now Frankenstein!
And I want to know...what the f**k you are doing with my time!

5. Duke Nukem (PC)
6. Civilization IV (PC)
7. Diablo (PC)
8. Utopia (Intellivision)
9. Tecmo Bowl (Nintendo)
10. Eastside Hockey Manager (PC)

I know most of these games are older, but so am I, so I get less time to play nowadays.

Honorable Mentions: Pitfall (Atari), Boxing and Tron Deadly Discs (Intellivision), Baldur's Gate and Command and Conquer: Red Alert (PC), Baseball (Colecovision), Madden Football (PS2 and PS3), Bowling (Wii), Lego Indiana Jones (PS3), Guitar hero III (PS3), Tetris (Gameboy) and Baseball All Stars (Nintendo).

I would be remiss if I didn't add the fact that I love playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance on the PS3 with my young son. He is fanatical about it and it allows us to bond a little more.
Damn I forgot about Utopia - the great granddaddy of strategy games!
