Some of the silents in HD have wowed me as much as any current release, perhaps more so given their age. Equally some have looked awful too.

If negative materials survive and haven't deteriorated, there's no reason they can't look as good as anything else more recent made on film.

The oldest standing set on one of the largest sound stages in Hollywood is being torn down today... The Paris Opera set from "Phantom of the Opera" 1925. Universal decided they needed the space for a theme park ride.

I heard that they were going to dismantle the actual Opera house set and store it elsewhere. I hope they've actually done that!

Damn, I ordered this on October 8 when it was on sale and Amazon ran out. Still waiting for them to get more.

I have been waiting since October 16. Why the big delay on the restock?

I did get an email from Amazon on November 1 asking if I still wanted a copy, which of course I said yes. Seems like a long time to get a BD.

Contrary to what has already been said, the BFI version is different. It's based on a different restoration. The UK Park Circus disc is the one similar to the US version. None are perfect, but I prefer the BFI edition for the set of extras (sound version reel!) and the 1925 version, ropey as it is, in HD.

Not on sale for anything close to that Amazon price in October, but if you are tired of waiting you can get one for $27 from walmart.com. At least they list it as in stock.
