That's the point -- sell out existing inventory of a discontinued item.

Agreed.

If true, I'm happy to see this is a truly limited print run.

Since there is only 20000 sets, I went ahead and put my pre-order in. Hopefully in drops in price so I can get it for even cheaper.

I was shocked the first time I went to a newly built IMAX theater that it was a flat screen - I didn't realize that IMAX wasn't always in a dome.

Obviously, I know better now that IMAX is a film format and not a screen size/shape, but even though normally I don't give a whip about 3-D, but heck yeah will I go see it in 3-D dome IMAX!
I wasn't aware that they can play 3D films on the domes. I've been to the dome at the Boston Museum of Science a couple times, but it was absolutely ages ago. I was under the impression they only showed 2D material on the dome. Is that incorrect then?

The dome is certainly a stunning experience for those who have never seen it.

Will the non-Collector's Gift Set have all the special features or will it be something like Singin' in the Rain where the new features will be on a separate disc only available in the box set?

To my knowledge, the Emerald Edition, which is still selling at the WBShop, had all of the content that the Collector's Box Set have (minus the Digital Copy). From the looks of it, the "standard 2D version" will probably just contain the movie.

Hopefully that is a lenticular cover. Seeing as it's WB, it will be. Definitely picking it up just to get that cover. It'd bring my copies of Oz to four. I've still got WB's ultimate 3 disc edition from 2005. I can't get rid of it. It has the reproduced premier ticket and premier program.

Ended up ordering the Emerald Edition on the WBShop yesterday since it was $15 and had all of the features that I am interested in.

I know the anniversary set will have a new transfer and 3D but I am not too interested in the 3D and the transfer on the last release was not that bad.

Sorry if this was already mentioned but is there a listing of the differences between each new edition?

I am just going to get the standard 2D release. I had the box of the 70th that was lost in a robbery and realize I don't need the extra stuff.

I've put this one on my wishlist. It's my favorite movie and I missed out on the first UCE, so I may try to get this one. The original Emerald Edition Blu-Ray was great, with the video and audio being spectacular on the feature, but I have some issues that might seem nitpicky, such as the lack of a decent navigational system, encoding the disc with BD-Java and not authoring in a resume or bookmark function, and the bonus features on the first disc looking like they'd been re-encoded to DivX with VirtualDub, pixellated and badly deinterlaced until many of them look jerky. (Fortunately, I fully intend to hold onto my 2005 Collector's Edition DVD for all the awesome physical bonus materials, so at least I can pop those in if I want to see them in good PQ.) In this case, it'll be to have all the pretties that come in the box, as I'm a sucker for just about anything shiny and pretty.

I changed my mind about the preorder. I think I may get the 2D set if the transfer is a lot better and just switch out the disc with my Emerald Set.

But why break up a set and have some strange hybrid collection of discs? Why wouldn't you just keep both sets/discs and keep the packaging, so later you can always sell it or trade it if you decide to?

WB restoration team member Ned Price says this in an L.A. Times article from this month: “We still can’t get all of the details that are in negatives,” Price said. “We’re always going to improve as technology improves and we’re starting to catch up with what’s in the camera originals.” Won't 4K be the max for a 35mm film? And aren't we already seeing more than audiences saw in 1939, with soft Technicolor film prints? After all, that was their reasoning for erasing the wires last time...that we were seeing what audiences then couldn't see.

Has it been announced what the special features will be and on which edition? Never owned any version of The Wizard of Oz before. I'm not a huge fan but want to own it as I like it and realize its historical importance. I also love documentaries on older films so would buy the edition that has the movie, of course, and features that delve into its history.

That's the one I have which I got for $16.49 when the price dropped for a day or so. I think the transfer is great.

You should get the Emerald edition that's on sale like was just noted. 9 hours of SD documentaries.
