Anyone who has the 2007 release be willing to trade the artwork for the Special Edition packaging?

Depends on your player. While they are region free you would need a player that can handle 50hz which a lot can't. Especially Sony players.

Thanks. Yeah, my main player is a Sony. Oh well.

As mentioned the UK release of Life is 50i so incompatible with US Sony (and other brands) other than the PS4.

The regular UK Planet Earth is 24p which I think is the one in the combination package you linked so it would play fine
The UK Special Edition Planet is 50i encoded however and has a PAL DVD as one of the discs so a couple problems.

I hate the cardboard sleeve style on the standalone special edition and the life/planet earth combo.

I may get the The BBC High Definition Natural History Collection with Planet Earth Special Edition. Anyone have this edition know if the Planet Earth set comes in a plastic amaray?

I bought the BBC Natural History 2 for Life to get it in a Viva Elite case. I've seen pics, and Planet Earth comes that way, too. Just have to make sure you're getting the six-disc edition and not the four-disc set. There are editions of both.

Is it possible to get the Planet Earth: Special Edition with a slipcase in decent condition?

I ordered it a couple of weeks ago and it came in terrible condition from Amazon, despite the shipping box being pretty sturdy. It seemed the item was damaged before shipping, and the corners of the book were also quite dinged, with one of the disc holder/pages being busted as well. I thought it was bad enough to warrant an exchange, so I contacted them and they replaced it for me.

However, the replacement is in less than ideal condition as well. The shipping package was again pretty sturdy, and the item was likely damaged before it was shipped. I'm not going to ask for a replacement this time, since it's not that bad, but the creases in the slipcase are quite annoying.

The problem with this item is that you hardly ever see it in store, so it's pretty much impossible to pick out a satisfactory one yourself.

I ordered Life as well when I originally ordered Planet Earth. This has a similar slipcase which came in perfect condition, so I'm pretty sure it's possible to get a good one. Guess I'm just having bad luck.

This isn't a cheap set, even when on sale, and considering it's something like a collector's item, it's kind of disappointing to get it in less-than-stellar condition.

I think Discovery discontinued this a long time ago and nobody has sold this regularly for quite a while. The only place I've seen it in nearly 3 years is on Ebay. If you are patient there will be copies for around $20 there occasionally new, but most of the time used. The slipcover/slipbox is much more difficult to get in OK condition even when sealed.

I used to have the 2007 Planet Earth that came in a regular blu ray case but, I sold it a couple years ago. I saw that Best Buy had the later release (6 Disc) for $19.99 so, I grabbed the last one on the shelf despite the box being a little bit dinged up. I opened it the next day and WOW! I have never seen a blu ray disc that scratched up. The first disc was horrible! There were a couple others that had scratches and glue around the edges. Only 2 discs out of the whole set were in acceptable condition. I took it back to BB today, and they had five new copies in mint condition. The lady at the service desk was nice enough to let me open it to make sure that all the discs were in mint condition as well. I can't wait to watch this again. I remember some amazing shots from this series but, I know there is so much more that I have forgotten from this doc in the past few years.

Sorry for the Necrobump, but anyone else having scratch problems with the six-disc Special Edition cardboard slipcase? Like, I've only had it for a couple months but there are already several scratches on the discs, and I'm really careful with discs. Any solutions?

This question never got an answer in the other thread either, so I thought I'd copy my post here as well, although both threads appear moribund ...

I'd like to second this question - and also, having read about the 50 Hz problem: is it a problem for this release as well or only the earlier Life package?

95+% sure UK Frozen Planet is 50HZ.

Uk Planet Earth SE was released in 2010, BUT the back cover of the combo edition says the set contains 5x BD25 and 3BD50 discs which would make you think the PE edition in the 2006 discs and not the 2010.

Thanks. I decided not to risk it and ordered an SE ($31) and US Frozen Planet ($12.50) on eBay. I have the DVD of Planet Earth, hoping for enough of an upgrade to be worth the investment - and fearing the 1080I!

The special edition has enough extras and other advantages that any minor diff b/w the 1080i and fake 1080p will fall into the abyss quickly. Pretty much unless you're doing them side by side it's hard to tell much difference (small adv here, small disadvantage there). The now 15 yo early HD source material has long shown it's age and what was considered 'spectacular' video quality in 2006-2007 has long been far exceeded by it's younger siblings. The quality of the documentary on the otherhand is still A+

This should be in the OP

And I take it this one is...

David Attenborough narration, 6 1080i discs

Best movie of 2016..so far Hacksaw Ridge
Worst movie of 2016..hands down The Birth of a Nation
