I actually did buy an extra PS2 new last year for about $80. I already had an old PS2 but figured I'd grab an extra and keep it boxed for sentimental value.

For anyone who missed out on the PS2 I'd definitely recommend still picking one up. The library of games is downright incredible, with about 2,000 titles in total, and a large number of them being among the better games ever made. You can also build a game library for the PS2 very cheap. Many great games can be found used, and some new for under $10, many under $5.

I went ahead and bought a PS2 and these games:
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Final Fantasy X-2 (I'll wait for the HD version of X)
Final Fantasy XII

they're all less than $20 (and some less than $15) on amazon!

I wanted to get Dragon Quest VIII too, but it's only available through so I decided to wait

I'm really getting into rpgs, so I couldn't pass on these prices

The only PS2 games I still own are Kingdom Hearts I & II, I don't even own a PS2 in 2013. If you really want to game PS2 games you could just download an emulator on your computer and play official discs from it.

I say no to that. Though I will admit I have been tempted to want to do that with Japan and Europe only games.

The PCSX2 emulator is legal to use if you own a PS2 and you extracted the BIOS from your PS2. It also means if you want to play region games, you'll need to extract the BIOS from PS2s that come from different regions. I would only recommend the emulator if your computer is powerful enough to handle the emulator with stable framerates; as it's a pretty demanding emulator.

You can always try it out, before taking your PS2 to the retirement home.

While that was true 5 years ago, computers of today can more than handle it.

I have 2 PS2 and its definitely a great system ... I'm one of the lucky ones that got a backwards compatible PS3 so I don't use them as much as I used too ...
Samsung 59in 3D HDTV (PN59D550)
Denon AVR1912
Energy CF-50 5.1
PS3 (FAT, MGS4 Edition)
Xbox 360 (Slim)

I believe any system you're interested in is worth buying. The PS2 still has an overwhelming selection of games available, and they're cheap. I still own one, and i wouldn't part with it.
