I don't buy into the whole "DYRL was a movie within the series" thing, mainly because that idea came about a decade after DYRL was released. I really doubt that was the original intent. Macross II takes place in a parallel universe now because it wasn't made by the people currently guiding the franchise, and also because it kinda sucked.

Macross II always has been considered to take place in a parallel universe. If you watch Macross: a future chronicle, it mentions it as such.

Macross: A Future Chronicle was an extra feature on Macross Plus Vol. 1 (1994).

Macross II came out in 1992.

It wasn't considered a parallel universe story until the release of Macross Plus in 1994. It was retconned just like DYRL.

Correct.
Back at the time when Macross II was released, it was supposed to be the legitimate continuation of the original SDF Macross. With Shoji Kawamori taking the reins of the Macross franchise for Big West (thank god), he decided to not make M2 a cannon part of the series, but rather a "parallel universe" which I guess is more polite than say "I think it's utter cr@p".

Too bad Kawamori doesn't want to touch what's happened to the Megaroad with a 10 foot stick (it's barely mentioned in Macross F, but definitely is tied into it. Was also mentioned in Macross 7, just wish I could see that one), it'd be nice to know the "official" version (so far all we know i that they "disappeared" when reaching the center of the galaxy).

Actually, communication between the united Earth gov and the megaroad 1 was lost near the center of the galaxy. They declared them lost (UN Spacy kept this info from the public).

Even though they have 0 rights to any of the new series, the Cease and Desist letter they sent when Macross Zero was supposed to be coming stateside scarred off BigWest (the legitimate owners of the IP). Agreed. I love ROBOTECH but I hate Harmony Gold as they ****ed up the franchise from coming outside of Japan. They are a perfect greedy ass company that gives us American companies a bad name.

Yeah it's basically their fault as to why Macross no longer gets released into America. Then the American fans suffer because of it. So obtaining this movie is by import only. But you do get a PS3 game with it which is nice.

Oh and Macross 30 was just released on PS3, but since I don't think it's a Hybrid Disc, it might be a full PS3 game.
