I love this movie with no apology. It knows exactly what it's doing and does it really well.

It's in my JC top three, along with The Fog and Big Trouble in Little China.

I consider it one of his best movies. It's a very creepy film.

I would place The Fog near the bottom. My top 3 are The Thing, Halloween and In The Mouth of Madness.

Each time I watch it, it creeps up as a favorite of mine. I would, without hesitation, put it in my top five Carpenter along with The Thing, Christine, They Live, and In the Mouth of Madness.

I put Prince of Darkness, The Fog, and The Thing towards the top of the list. And put Halloween towards the bottom. I know i'm in the very minority when it comes to Halloween. But I think II is better than I.

Halloween is so hard to place in proper historical context because so many movies after Halloween ripped parts of it off. It was a great film upon release. So many copycats have stripped it of some power.

Love POD, considering an upgrade.

I have the "stealth" dvd re-master included with the John Carpenter: Master of Fear set, which appears to utilize the same master Scream Factory was given for the blu. Very similar image qualities, color, though the DVD has some pretty strong edge enhancement.

How much of an improvement am I looking at with the blu-ray?

Apparently, the films in the John Carpenter: Master of Fear 4 Film collection received new masters prior to their HD debut. I've looked closely at The Thing and Prince of Darkness, and they seem to be based on the same master Universal utilized for the blu-rays of The Thing and POD (via shout).

Details, pic, review...from way back when:

I have the Image Entertainment edition of POD, the re-mastered version in the Master of Fear set--details below--but not the re-release on the right...

---

relevant quotes:

..Universal has been creating multi-film releases for awhile now that offer exclusive, newly-remastered presentations (like the widescreen versions of Twins and Kindergarten Cop only available in the Arnold Schwarzenegger Comedy Collection). As an owner of all four individual John Carpenter releases, I can confirm this DVD offers also contains a few visual upgrades...

...On Prince of Darkness, the clarity also takes a significant step up (a little more than The Thing), but the more noticeable difference was how vivid the colors are in the new set. Skintones look lively, red blood jumps off the screen and the green grass looks lush and striking....

---

For the record: I've never been able to compare the re-release of POD--Universal's edition from 2003--to the original Image Entertainment edition, so I can't attest to a difference between those transfers. I did read somewhere the same master was used for the two releases (Image and '03 Universal). One crude capture I took of the MOF release shows it's distinct from the Image release, at least, and parallels the Scream Factory blu-ray pretty closely in most respects--those lush greens, for instance--with the obvious difference in resolution.

I haven't been able to find additional caps/comparisons of the MOF with the blu anywhere, so I was hoping someone who had it could contrast, especially in motion.
