Ok, I popped in my BLU and the audio is better than I recalled. And my calibrated settings I use are quite dark for thia film. In regards to the previous screen caps shown (previous page) I can barely make out the text. So I may use a different setting for watching this film in the future. My tweaked my brightness somewhat and it helps for sure on this film.
Stop the Replacing of original Studio Opening / Closing logos! These are becoming endangered and should be kept intact. They are part of film history.

As I remember, the film had a heavy and dark look in the theater with drained color except for the reds. It almost looked naturally lit. That's what I remember most from the film....its foreboding, dark and heavy look. The Superbit looked nothing like that theatrical experience. It was pretty and detailed, but it was way too bright and colorful.

$7.88 at Walmart. Someone was complaining no dts-hd master but it has an uncompressed 5.1 which in my book is better sounding on my rig. Keanu sucks in this one for sure, but it still kicks butt overall......( matrix trilogy & speed are his only decent outings)....might have to keep my superbit copy but for 7.88.... Wtf??
That's a nice combo disc for someone. I think Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is underrated.

More than likely everyone saying that the BD looks fine on their TVs have the brightness turned up waaay too high.

I think we're all entitled to our opinions , even tho SPQR does really seem to enjoy bashing this transfer...but name calling is a little out of bounds, obviously we all love movies, and I for one am gratefully for the info learned in even the dissenting opinions... This has been a real informative thread and I thank you all for your participation... And I just remembered Keanu wasn't half bad in his directorial debut-"man of tai chi".... But was loathsome in the watcher. Don't remember him in "parenthood"

I think most people who don't calibrate or just casual tv buyers have their brightness too high IMO. In fact I know people who love the look of the smoothing and pushing the color up too high and making everything look more vivid then it should be. I suppose if they prefer it that way so be it. I guess I prefer my movies to look like Gordon Willis worked on them lol

I just picked this up. It is two separate discs in one case. I have only started watching the Special Features for Dracula, and it appears to be the same as the individual release.

I finally watched the blu-ray for the first time after avoiding it based on the rumors of the 'bad' transfer. I have to say, my jaw dropped at what I saw. The picture quality was beautiful and blew me away!

And to the naysayers that think a persons TV settings must be maxed out to think the transfer looks 'good'. The brightness on my set is actually turned down a bit, and even the backlight is at 15 instead of 30. Contrast is also at a normal level, but I lowered it slightly than the default setting. So the picture is not artificially boosted in brightness at all on my set. And noise reduction is turned off as well, so a normal film transfer looks like film when transferred correctly. Meanwhile the color setting is pretty much at the default middle section, but turned down a slight notch. So again, even the colors are not 'boosted' as they could be like how some peoples sets are set to. So my set was at the custom setting I have for all my viewing pleasure, and I did not have to adjust it at all while watching this film.

So right from the opening sequence. I was impressed with the image quality, and kept being wowed as the film went on. I've never seen the film look this good before! The old dvd looks lousy in comparison, and that was the last version I watched years ago after news of the new transfer came out. Strangely, I didn't enjoy the film at that time as much as I did as a kid growing up. I thought maybe it just didn't appeal to me now.

But I'm glad I gave it another spin, and was in love with the film all over again!

Yes, the picture is dark, but not oppressively so. It all looks right for what the films aiming for. But colors do 'pop' in numerous sequences(the golden glow during the chase scene near the end was gorgeous!), and all the details of the cinematography just shoot right out at you and it's a constant eye candy piece of cinema just from the stylish appearance of the film.

The soundtrack was also awesome and powerful. So again, even the claims the mix lacks 'punch' was misleading in my opinion, and I had feared the worst for this release. But imagine my surprise when none of those fears came true. So I'll have to take such transfer criticisms with a grain a salt next time and judge for myself. Only if a transfer is obviously smeared in noise reduction and edge enhancement should I take peoples concerns seriously. Since, wow, people were complaining over this transfer from the very beginning and it has the unjust reputation of looking 'lousy' on Blu-ray when it looks amazing! They better not tinker with the transfer to try to please those who complained about it's appearance, since the complainers were in the wrong this time.
