Movie had the new Paramount logo and skimmed through the movie and it seems to match the screenshots of the 3D version with the same colors

Interesting. All Paramount need to do is just drop the brightness and encode the base view and be done with it.

A proper 2D version of the new transfer was a thing a while back, I saw it on frickin' TV last year, on Comedy Central of all places! It'd be so awesome if Paramount were to do a silent 2D BD update, as although I can watch the 3D in 2D the grain is so poorly encoded that it looks like shit whereas the roll-off of detail in 3D helps to disguise it.

The boost in brightness doesn't help. If they toned that down and improved the encode, all would be good.

This scene in particular is a bad one:

Started watching the Netflix version. Looks way better than the 2008 Blu Ray. Like these colors a lot more

For those watching the movie - make sure to select the 6.1 DTS-HD MA audio track (the movie defaults to the 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track) - I found the the DTS-HD track sounded much more dynamic and aggressive. The TrueHD track sounded flat in comparison.

Was watching the iTunes 1080p copy of this on my iPad yesterday during a train ride and it looked like it was the transfer used for the 3D copy, but I wasn't 100% sure. Can anyone confirm?

I watched the old BD yesterday and it looked terrible. Waxy DNR picture. yuck. Is the 3D version played back in 2D really an improvement? It looks a little teal?

Does the 3D disc even play 2D? Anytime I watch this movie I just watch the iTunes copy, which is the new transfer.

I just watched the new version on Amazon and it looks miles better! I guess we will have to wait for the eventual 4K version for this transfer.

Also it looks nowhere near as "yellow" as the screenshots indicate.

I remember Top Gun looking processed but not really DNR style. Been a while though.

I saw the new master projected at a "Flashback Friday" event at a local theatre last year. Looked great. None of the weird colours that seemed present on the 3D version.
