Default Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced

Just announced...

http://www.destructoid.com/square-an...i-234145.phtml

At the Final Fantasy Gallery event today in Japan, Square Enix announced (with English help from andriasang!)that a brand new game based on Final Fantasy XIII was in production. That game is Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII.

The game is being pegged as Lightning's final battle, as the character becomes the strongest she's ever been. Director Motomu Toriyama stated that Lightning had gone from a human to a God-like figure over the course of XIII and XIII-2, and that she'll be even more powerful this time.

The game is also going to be "world-driven," meaning that some form of social gaming is going to be present. That'll go over well with the fans! Lightning will be customizable somewhat, able to equip some big weapons and varied costumes, while combat will be more focused on button responses. Square Enix doesn't want to call it an action game, but it seems battles will be more action-heavy.

It'll be set in an area called Navus Partus, if that excites you.

Square Enix says more details will come later. Will she have a personality this time? Who knows!?

IGN post for the announcement...

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/09/...xiii-announced

Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Set to arrive in 2013, Lightning Returns will incorporate a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system, according to Square Enix. The game will feature Lightning as a solo playable character and allow her to freely roam a new world.

Other details regarding Lightning Returns are limited. We do know that the main story takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, set in a world called Novus Partus -- which is composed of four islands connected by monorail. The development team told IGN that three of the guiding pillars for the art direction in Lightning Returns are "gothic, mechanical and fantasy."

The most startling change to Lightning Returns comes in the form of the doomsday countdown. According to Square-Enix, the world will end after 13 days, and a massive clock will count down constantly in the corner of the screen to indicate this looming deadline. Any action players take, even taking the monorail from place to place, will spend time and hasten the end of days.

With Lightning as the only playable character, players will have unparalleled control over customizing her looks and combat style. The battle system itself, a greatly modified version of the previous two, will feature real-time elements including direct control of Lightning's movement and her attacks, as well as time-based moves that drain the doomsday counter. Lightning Returns will also include a real-time block system, designed to make battles much more active and time-based. Even dying mid-battle will activate a prompt to give players the choice to rewind their mistakes at the expense of the timer.
The battle is hopeless... There is no beating the Pigeon Boys.

I'm conflicted, as the ending for XIII-2 made me flail in rage, but I'll probably still pick this up day one. A year seems kind of short though.

The XIII universe gets a lot of hate on the interwebs, dunno why because i simply adored BOTH games immensely!

I put in 60 hours on XIII and 40 on XIII-2. So yeah count me in the super excited for this sequel camp!

Personally i hate change, so of course im happy when i get to stay in my own little comfort zone with the same characters, world and hopefully battle system.

EDIT : Waiiit! i just read more details and it IS all different and changed! LOL there goes my comfort zone! :P

But seriously, Lightning solo? tweaks to the battle system? HUNDREDS of years after XIII-2? ARG i'm scared now!

I really hope they don't turn this game into a real time action RPG. At this point i think i would of rather have a brand new Final Fantasy 15 with all the new things rather than totally change a sequel which has a feel of it's own, and while both XIII and XIII-2 were different, they had the same feel. They should of finished the trilogy with all the aspects we knew and loved and THEN make all those changes on a brand new game.

But yeah i know it's way too early to form an opinion yet but it's just i loved those two games so much it kinda scares me!

I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since Super Nintendo! I've been wanting to pick one up but have been a little wary of it. I think I'll pick this one up. Would anyone here recommend a game for me to pick up to prepare?

I've managed to complete every main quest, almost every side quest, and all available Canvas of Prayers quests by the end of the 4th day. Even killed about 15 of the Last Ones.

Gonna give this thread a bump since I just beat it a few days ago. I managed to get 91% of the trophies on the first go, but I think it will be awhile before I jump into another playthrough to finish the plat. Overall, the game was pretty ho-hum for me, but I gotta say I thought the Caius/Yeul storyline here (Main quest 3) was really great and a nice continuation of their story from 13-2.

I put off playing this game for nearly 3 years. I should have continued to put off playing it.

A Realm Reborn launched on PS3. I consider it the best FF in the past decade.

same, I played it for less than an hour and didn't like the timer thing.

I want to platinum XIII and XIII-2 (only need 3 trophies for each) before I give it another try
