They opened up the UHD version's mattes top and bottom for the 3D version. The reason why the image appears to be laterally shifted in comparison to the UHD when watching the 3D version in 2D is because you're only seeing part of the intended image, there's slightly different spatial information held in the other 'eye'.

Or that's just simply how they converted the 3D, as not all conversion processes use an untouched original for the left eye and put the difference in the right, some conversions create two entirely new frames from the one original.

To me it just looks like they opened the top and bottom, then zoomed in a little. The zooming would crop info from all sides, but the opening of the mattes added more info on the top and bottom than the zooming took away.

It seems like the 1.85 ratio is what the director intended, so if I were to watch a 2D version I should go with the 2008 release or the UHE right? Rather than watching the 2D version on the 3D disc.
