I always found sections of Puzo's novel to be hilariously smutty.

The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing.

Can't agree with that. The chrono version ruins Part II, where the flashbacks are needed to juxtapose father and son at the same age. Part II is ruined without it.

The "young Vito" stuff wasn't presented first in the novel either, so the "Complete Novel for Television" concept is fundamentally flawed. Plus the prequel stuff simply doesn't work as an introduction to any returning character. I love Part II but there isn't a moment in the film that would serve as a better introduction to Vito Corleone than the wedding scene in the original film.

It's pure gimmickry, like watching the scenes in the Marvel movies in chronological order which results in ridiculous disruptions.

Agreed.

What I want Paramount to do is non-chronological extended versions of both I and II, because the new footage is absolutely brilliant, some of it essential, but I don't like to see it in the chronological surrounding.

Crazy talk! Pure crazy talk!

Actually... I envy you seeing these for the first time. It can seem like a time investment, but you're gonna finish them and want to turn around and watch them again. They ARE that good.

Actually, I was had never watched the entire films until they were released on DVD. Like yourself, I had caught bits and pieces when I was younger. But when I watched the first two movies on DVD I was in such awe at what masterpieces those films were/are (parts I and II). Just make sure to watch each film in one entire viewing as a movie is always more impactful this way. I only say that because they are longer movies especially II.

The first time I ever saw the first two films, someone at the cinema had had the bright idea of putting them on as a double feature. We, all unsuspecting, didn't know the running times when we rocked up for a session starting at 9:00 p.m. or thereabouts (necessary because of the ratings, I suspect). And when the lights came up for a second time, and we realised that a) it was only the Intermission of the second film, and that there was an unknown length of time still to go, and that b) it was already well after 1 in the morning ... almost everyone groaned and most of the audience gave up and went home.

I stuck it out, but it wasn't fair to either film. It took me another couple of times seeing them both before I could shake that feeling that they went on forever.
