I do think that most smoking in today's films is "fake" (not tobacco or pot). I believe that there may even be union rules that real tobacco cannot be consumed for the filming of a movie.

So, they generally use fake cigarettes, such as prop cigarettes or herbal (non tobacco) cigarettes. I think that today's legitimate theater productions uses prop cigarettes, so that audiences aren't exposed to real tobacco.

These union rules might not apply to independent films, such as those from Korine. Korine isn't exactly a major studio guy.

If there weren't union regulations for tobacco use the entire cast of Mad Men would be dead by now.

I really have no idea what they used to imitate the smoke in this film but I wouldn't be surprised if they used the real thing.
Most films that I find good I don't want to experience again.
