I've seen a ton of contrast-boosted new masters over the years that kill subtle detail.
But it "kills detail" compared to what? Some super-bright old telecine that's got light literally bleeding in during the title sequence (so lord knows what impact that has on the rest of it)? Just because that detail is there doesn't mean we were meant to see it. They've upped the gamma and it's so much more pleasing to my eyes than the thin grey murk that passes for black on the old one. YMMV.

It reminds me of the two Ghostbusters BD transfers, the blacks are considerably darker on the 4K transfer.

But like with Ghostbusters, I don't think the deeper blacks hurt the image on this new transfer.

That just looks like corrected black levels to me. I can still make out the minute details that are apparent on the old disc due to excessive brightening so it's not really crushed. There are fragments missing, but that looks like it is due to the macroblocking.

The same effect can be seen in cap 16.

Yep, good call on Ghostbusters. Having more contrast in an image (short of an outright technical **** up like with certain Sony discs and X-Files S8) isn't a bad thing by any means as you were certainly gonna get a ton of it in a theatrical print, and these recent examples are nothing like the clipped "contrast boostings" seen in the prior video domain as they transitioned from the old analogue tricks to digital. They roll off in a much more filmic manner.

Let me rephrase here guys. I'm not saying the master is bad or sucks. I get as annoyed as you guys do when someone posts in a Goodfellas or Ghostbusters thread screaming to the rooftops about how the entire master sucks because of some shot being a little darker or whatever. Overall it looks like a huge improvement here, and that living room shot shows a stunning difference.

All I'm saying is all that lost detail in the alley shot made me worry it was a little contrast boosted or had too high gamma. If people seeing it in motion say otherwise then fair enough. I'll see for myself when a US version comes out or I get tired of waiting for it.

It's got a richer, denser look to it (the opposite of which was one of my main bugbears about SC's new transfer for Total Recall) but it doesn't look in any way unnatural re: the lighting. The opening shot that flies through the Garden is plenty darker, for example, but seeing as it's a big sports arena mainly lit by spotlights directed at the ring it works.

Having actually WATCHED IT and it being my favourite film, I take issue with it looking like it was encoded by Warner Bros circa 2007.

I think a higher bitrate encode of the 4K remaster would ensure in a more pleasing looking releases.

The newer transfer of Ghosbusters does look nicer than the old transfer, however.
