You basically get to see the fruits of their undeniably-ambitious vision and you also get to see that chip away as they mismanage everything to the point of basically subletting the rights to Cannon.

Then you should watch the extended cut of 1, the Donner cut of 2 and Superman Returns. These three represent the mostly-accurate "Donner is God, Salkinds are evil" mentality. You get to see two movies in their closest state of non-interference on the part of the Salkinds that you're likely to ever see readily available on home video, you also see a movie that was slavishly reverent to Donner's interpretation of the character AND you get to see Brando' Jor-El in 3 consecutive movies.

That's how I see the box set: one series of 4 films and another of 3.
That's a nice recommendation. I'm on number 4 right now and I'll definitely be doing this routine for the rest of the movies, followed by diving into the box's extras.

For no.1 I'd watch the theatrical cut first. The added scenes in the extended edition weren't really needed imo and the audio's better too, the original stereo mix that is. I'm not a fan of the 5.1 remix that the extended edition has, the sound design was changed too much and not for the better. The extended edition is worth watching though afterwards, the transfers are different between the two cuts as well.

For no.2, I would watch the theatrical cut first then the Donner Cut not long afterwards. The story is more or less the same but they're told very, very differently. I personally can't decide which version I prefer more as they are both enjoyable imo.

So... no one thinks this will get re-issued? It seems to have gone OOP. It was on sale at BB last Christmas for about 50 and I wanted to get it but hesitated. Now It's 80-some on Amazon and it's not even available at BB anymore.

If I really want to get my hands on these (and I've never seen them before), does anyone have any advise?

If all else fails, try the buy/trade sub-forum!

It's available on Amazon's marketplace via fulfillment for $59.96. The UK version sells on eBay auctions for $30-$50.

I saw the Amazon Marketplace one, but it says it's Region 2/B.

Is there any difference between the US and UK version?

I think the US box is more elaborate:

supermanmotionbluart3.jpg

The UK one is just a Digipak. I don't think the discs have any titles on them apart from tiny writing on the outer edge.

I didn't cursor over the picture to realize they're selling the UK one - sorry. But it's region free, not B. Other than the ugly "18" stickers and the lack of visible titles on each disc - no diff (I'm pretty sure they're the same discs with different paper labels). See and judge for yourself : Here and Here.

Not too difficult to see why it's out of print anyway... you know they're just going to release another massive boxed set somewhere down the line with Man of Steel included.
2012 favs: Prometheus, Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures, Universal Classic Monsters, The Terminator (UK), E.T. (digibook), JAWS (digibook), Walking Dead Season 2 w/ Zombie Head, Full Metal Jacket (digibook), Star Trek TNG Season 1, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Casablanca, Game of Thrones Season 1, Cleopatra (UK)

I doubt that's gonna happen. Would be like if they made a box set with all 7 Batman films, even though they're two separate entities.

The Anthology will come back in stock, just wait and see

EDIT: Wait, it IS in stock. I dont know what you guys are talking about.

Superman Returns is in the set though, which is really confusing, because it acts as both a continuation and a reboot all at the same time. And a rip off of the first film, for that matter.

With Man of Steel so close to release, one would think that stand-alone Blu-rays of these movies would be hitting stores soon. Maybe not, but I wish. I want a stand-alone of the theatrical version of Superman II, because it's still the best superhero movie ever made.

You are correct. Though Superman Returns was supposed to be a sequel to Superman II (ignoring Sups III and IV) so that's why they included it. It also tried to be a semi-reboot which of course never lead to anything. I was one of the few people who liked that movie btw.

Man of Steel however is a complete do-over/reboot (ala Batman Begins) and i cant wait to see how it pans out.

Sure, but it plays in the same "Superman Universe" set up in Donner's film, and is in fact a sequel to 2. Check out some video sites for the deleted return to Krypton sequence.

The point that you won't get a Burton/Nolan Batman set is appropriate and spot on.

I'm happy with the UK set as it was fairly priced. However, I do not understand the logic of printing tiny titles at the outer edge. The first time I opened the set, I was like WTF? It took me a long while to see the freaking microscopic titles.
All right, look if you absolutely have to tell her the truth, at least wait until the timing's right. And that's what deathbeds are for.
