Both Fox and Disney make me very angry. Fox for not releasing all their TV shows on Blu-ray (like Modern Family and It's Always Sunny), Disney for giving up on 3D Blu-rays, and BOTH for not using Dolby Atmos.

What are some good rear Atmos speakers for a 7.1.4 setup? I can only seem to find stuff you're supposed to put on top of front tower speakers.

You can really use any speaker that is Monopole in design. like always, it is best to try and match the timbre of the other speakers in your setup. If you go with in-ceiling speakers, go for ones that have the enclosed back can.

I see media sections are popping up in stores in preparation of the players anticipated release.

It's ashamed to think some of the studios have initially elected to not use either of the new audio codecs. . I hope they change their minds and get with the program quickly. Too bad that the consortium did make it mandatory to have either of the two codecs on the discs in the new 4K UHD format.

The two immersive formats, by their very natures, require specialized object based mixes or re-mixes to take advantage of their three-dimensional sound properties. Then they have to be converted to a consumer based version of those same formats for home use. That does take time and money.

They're not just PCM compression codecs for whatever channel count a particular PCM soundtrack master happened to be in, and are fairly easy to work with and zip in mere minutes. As Dolby Atmos and DTS: X become the industry standards for audio mixing, then you'll see them become more the norm than the exception.

Fox was originally going to release prepped Dolby Atmos tracks, but something potentially happened to put a monkey wrench in the plan.

I'm new to the whole atmos thing. Just bought a denon 3200 and front height speakers. Sounds amazing, only a handful of blu's have it encoded. So uhd will mostly atmos? I just bought a non 4k 70" tv last year and not looking to upgrade. Will a ps4 and my tv (sharp lc-70eq10u) play uhd so I can enjoy atmos?

The PS4 does not support UHD Blu-ray. You will need a UHD Blu-ray player, which should down convert UHD content to 1080p as long as the TV has HDCP 2.2 HDMI ports.

all of this we know, my underlying point is here they are putting out their new flagship, crown jewel of digital media for video & audio in support of 4K UHD/HDR TV's with new receivers and players to support this next gen media and their are some studios that won't be releasing their media with the highest level of audio capable.

I mean it's not like they had no idea they were releasing these things, they had time and money so that's no excuse. it reminds me of consoles, too many times the newest consoles are released with almost no new games available to show off their new hardware capabilities.

I just wish one time when releasing a new format, it's correct on all levels out of the box. the other thing, is, thanks to the internet, sites like this and others as well as printed magazines, consumers are more educated than ever about this stuff. they can't so easily get away with stuff with so many people knowing what the deal is. also, who wants to be the first one to buy a new 4K UHD Blu-Ray and then a year later, have to rebuy that title because they finally added ATMOS or DTS:X to the mix? I had hoped that this was their chance to get it right, but, they haven't.

I do understand and respect what you posted, so, don't think I'm down on your post, this is about the industry.

So I was going to wait to install DTS:X but had to test it myself. Too impatient lol. All in all, not seeing much differences with Dolby Surround and Neural X up to now. They both do an incredible job of placing certain effects in the top speakers as an upmixer. I have yet to try a DTS:X encoded movie though. I will be buying Crimson Peak at some point, so that will be my first test. Not much out there to test with right now. Even Ex Machina in Canada is not DTS:X.

EDIT: I said much difference, but I do notice a little more straight forward activity in the tops compared to Dolby Surround.

when you get Crimson Peak, please do post your thoughts of it with straight DTS:X.
I'm happy to see someone who hasn't posted how bad Nerual X is, it's a welcome change of pace. about how long did it take for the firmware to completely install and were there any issues along the way? also, what movies did you test Neural X out with?

and I wonder why that is? I see this a lot, from folks in different regions, I'm sure there is an answer, but, I often wonder why all movies are not encoded the same way everywhere?

All the talk I saw with Neural X on another forum was how bad it was with 2-channel music and some distortion. I don't get all the talk about that since it's, well, 2 channel music. As far as the movies I tried it with, I tried Spectre which had great effects with the helo scene in the beginning especially, Edge of Tomorrow which was really great as well, and Interstellar. The firmware took about an hour to install and I used the Ethernet wire as opposed to my wireless capability. Didn't want anything crapping out. No issues whatsoever.

Most are the same here as in the US, but this one for some reason wasn't.

For movies go with Straight, music is your preference...many DSP's are available ( concert hall's, disco, opera, video games, classical, and Movie ).

The Cinema DSP for movies did not differ much from Straight...so I keep it there for blu's.......your preference..
PBN Montana Loudspeakers: EPS-2, SPC-3, Mini Monitors. Wyred 4 Sound MMC amplifier and a Yamaha CX-A5100 pre/pro. Interconnects are Audioquest Red River ( XLRs ). Sub: PBN SSW

So is Sony going to try to force us to upgrade to 4k in order to get Dolby Atmos tracks? That's what it sounds like in the case of Concussion. It's unfortunate because I have a projector that's less than a year old and don't plan on upgrading (or massively downgrading in image size) to 4k any time soon.
