Would it be possible for Sony to come up with a downloadable software update to allow the PS3 to play 1080/50i BDs, or would that require a hardware change?

I'm thinking of buying the UK SE version of Planet Earth but I read that it is 50Hz. Looking at the list in the first post, no Sony player will play 50Hz- is that right?

I own a Sony BDV-N590 (Singapore)

No US Sony player, as far as I know, plays 50Hz titles.

I don't know, but since (according to websites) Singapore is in a PAL region, I'd guess that yours is compatible. Have you tried PAL DVDs in it?

I've noticed NTSC NA PS3's play PAL DVD just fine if you extract the content from VOB to MPG without re-encoding (no quality loss, original bitstream). Raw MPEG-2 576/50i (anamorphic) is supported by NTSC PS3, so the playback enforcement is purely regional. I have not tested with 1080/50i but I'd imagine results would be similar.

I have a region-free 1080i50 disc and it won't even load.

I've purchased the listed Samsung BD-D5100 Blu-Ray player here in Canada and it won't play PAL DVDs from Australia (Region 4)

Does it give a "wrong region" message?

The first post is about which players are compatible with 50i discs (though it does mention some that can be made region free), since there are titles that are set to "all region" etc.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this, but 100% of all desktop computers and 100% of all Notebook computers have graphics cards that will convert 50Hz 1080i and SD PAL to 60Hz. So all one needs to do is own a computer with a BD-ROM drive and software like PowerDVD 12 Ultra and they will be able to play Blu-ray and DVD titles that are region free (region all) with no problems.

Just touched base with Denon again as I'm looking for a player to play all my discs including SACD, DVD-Audio and 1080i50 Blu-ray discs. They have a price over $200 cheaper than the Oppo if you pick up refurbished through Accessories4Less, $279. Unfortunately it falls short on the 108050 question. They will playback 50Hz content but won't convert it, which seems almost totally redundant given how few consumer-level TV's will accept a 1080i50 signal.

Guess I'll be eventually upgrading to the Oppo 103 it seems. This Sammy BD-D5700 is pretty buggy, often just hangs on load and the only button that responds is power so you have to recycle, sometimes it will take until the 3rd or 4th attempt to load a disc and it's completely random on which discs and when it decides not to load. Anyway, it was a cheap temporary solution, looking forward to perhaps getting the Oppo just after Christmas.

It converts 50Hz to 60Hz but does not bypass region coding.

Unlikely, because this is for "US Blu-ray players and 50Hz compatability"

Hello folks,

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I have a question. I have an Insignia NS-BRDVD3 blu ray player. I would like to purchase the Sherlock season 1 and 2 set from Amazon UK, but it is encoded in 50hz. My question is two parts: Will my player accept the 50hz signal, and will it convert the 50hz to 60hz so I can watch it on my TV? Thanks in advance for any help.

The Insignia NS-BRDVD3 & NS-BRDVD4 players for sure automatically converts region free SD PAL & 50hz content so you can watch it on your NTSC 60/120/240hz TV.

If the disc is region locked you will need an older firmware that allows you to manually change the region code. You can find that firmware here.

We are moving to London next month and are wondering if our US-bought S570 will work in the UK? Will be connecting to an HDTV in the UK using HDMI (it will be a UK HDTV). Will region-free Blu-ray discs work? Region A-only discs? Region B-only discs?

The list in the first post shows that it won't play 50Hz content, but online specs say that it can play video frame rates of 60p, 60i, 50p, and 50i, but not sure if that's just combined for both US and UK versions of the player.

Thanks.

A US Sony BDP-S570?

Will region-free Blu-ray discs work?
Yes (as long as they aren't 50i/p).

Region A-only discs?
Yes - if that is what it says on the player.

From the manual
Quote:
Your player has a region code printed on the
rear of the unit and will only play BD-ROMs/
DVD-ROMs labeled with identical region
codes or All.
Region B-only discs?
No - see above (unless there's a way of making the player region free - eg. a region free mod).

The UK/European/Australian versions will be able to play all the above. I don't think the US ones will play 50i/50p. You could test it if you have a PAL DVD or Blu-ray disc with 50i content and try it with a 50hz compatible display, but I don't think it will be able to play it.

Question

Does anyone know if the Vizio VBR337 will play Region Free discs, such as Sherlock? I didn't see it on the list, although the Visio VBR133 was listed. I currently have a Sony S280 player, and my tv is a Vizio E3D470VX. I appreciate any/all information.

I'm looking to buy the Lenovo Ideapad Y580(the model with the Blu-Ray of course), so I would be able to buy this Misfits boxset when it comes out(it says nothing about the regions yet but the other Misfits boxsets are region a compatible) & play them on that laptop & use an HDMI cable to output it on my TV & it would work?

Also, does anyone know if This Is England (the movie & the two mini series) are Region A compatible?

I don't believe any US Sony Blu-Ray players can play 50i content.
