Cool. I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy either the film or the quality of the UHD.

Looks almost exactly as it did in the theater.

Not really shocked, but if you saw it theatatrically you won't be surprised to see this movie isn't exactly a highlight monster. This movie is more about bleak muted colors, with more of an eggshell/paper whites, which is Roger deakins style. Same deal with sicario. Razor sharp image, though.

That being said, it's not botched up and too dim to watch, which I have seen with some hdr movies. It's essentially the perfect theatrical experience, which is what deakins operates in and wants us to see

Just finished watching this and I’m actually surprised people are mixed on the PQ of the movie. Watching on an OLED I see absolutely nothing to complain about. The resolution is very crisps and the colors are absolutely stunning and amazing. I just simply can’t see how someone can be disappointed by it honestly. Yeah there’s not a lot of vibrant colors but that’s not what this movie has to offer generally but even when they do rarely is looks amazing like when Joi is wearing her yellow rain coat in a very bleak junk yard... the colo just pops out and looks amazing. I think this looks better than when I saw it in theater and I’m absolutely happy I bought it. Can’t wait to watch the 3d version.

Yes, and I screened it first at an AMC Dolby Cinema, followed by a Sony Digital 4K setup at an Alamo Drafthouse. The UHD disc is the best I've seen so far.

I'm with you here, although screening Dunkirk in IMAX 70MM at the Lincoln Square was my top theatrical in 2017, BR2049 in Dolby Cinema gave it a good run for all the marbles.

Saw Blade Runner 2049 in IMAX and I felt the open matte framing make it feel more intimate than larger than life, save for the Sea Wall fight and the Vegas landscape shots.

I seriously think 2.39:1 is the better framing, but Deakins really knows how to nail his shots regardless of framing.

Why does Deakins get all of the credit for the look of the film? Shouldn't Villeneuve get some credit too?

Blade Runner 2049 was a tremendous experience in Lincoln Square IMAX (even though it wasn't projected on 70MM film) and I really wanted to see it at the Dolby Cinema but that never fell through.

2049 is an epic sci-fi noir masterpiece.

It depends on how collaborative the effort of the visual look was between the director and DP. Some directors are not Hitchcock where they call all the shots and may as well not have a DP at all.

Absolutely yes. Easily the best film I saw in 2017.

Blade Runner & Blade Runner 2049 join a select group of films where the first and second films are both masterpieces: Godfather & Godfather Part II, Alien & Aliens, and now the Blade Runner(s).

The review over at High-Def Digest nailed it:

https://bluray.highdefdigest.com/523...unner2049.html

I will watch any Denis Villeneuve film, very interested in his Dune project.

P.S. I hope for no more Blade Runner films, these two are all we need.

Just hope he has more control over Dune than Lynch did.

If the processing is choking on the bit depth then it will cause the kind of extreme banding that some folks are reporting.
Geoff, I've inquired about this issue before. First, are the voltage controllers that increase/decrease the brightness on the LCD/OLED panels following the PQ curve? Or is the PQ curve applied to the video signal, then the video signal sent to these current controllers in a normal gamma or linear fashion as in regular "SDR" monitors.
Meaning the PQ curve, which is more like thisinverted s curve.jpg, is being represented on the panel itself by a normal 8-10 bit panel's discrete steps as always. If so, then you might ultimately need 11 bits on the tone steps on the panel itself to represent fully the 10bit PQ shaped steps (and 13bits to represent 12bit PQ) to not lose PQ in-between steps. PQ "curve" is an more efficient way to code steps but in "decompressing" (displaying) the curve the panel must be able to display this variable steps coded.
