I know there was an earlier version of Willy Wonka on DVD...the first version that came out, but no other clue about. I guess there could be three masters in some form of this title as weird as it seems.
JVC DLA-RS4810 front projector (ISF pro-cal'd)
Stewart StudioTek 100, CinemaScope 9 foot wide screen
Samsung 51" F5300B plasma (ISF pro-cal'd)
Oppo BDP-980, BDP-983 & BDP-103D Blu-ray player
Denon 7.1 AVR-X3000 (REW & Audyssey pro-cal'd)
Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 55 (fronts)
Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 (surrounds x 4)
HSU VTF-15H sub

I never realized there was that big of a framing difference between the 2001 DVD and the Blu-Ray. I'm surprised it didn't spark a huge misframing controversy back when it came out like Back To The Future did. I know initially the 2001 release was actually full screen only until there was enough of a backlash that WB put out a widescreen version. The 2005 and 40th DVDs were just repacks of the 2001 disc so those should also have the extreme cropping too.

I'll have to pop in the '97 flipper disc to see it if also had the same framing. It had an older transfer that predates the one used on the 2001 disc.

EDIT: According to the shots I just skimmed through, the '97 DVD does appear to have framing closer to the Blu-Ray. The framing is not as tight as the 2001 DVD.

I'm sure that depends on who you ask.

Yep, the '97 disc is what I was thinking about earlier; is it anamorphic?

Sorry, That was actually a typo. I meant the framing of the Blu-Ray and '97 DVD isn't as tight as the 2001 DVD.

I believe this film was filmed in Academy ratio (1.37:1), just like The Sting.

So were tons and tons of movies, but they were still matted for theatrical exhibition and that is the OAR.

Im one of those that would prefer the fullframe of the movie. I wished this was released @ 1.37 ratio or at least give us both versions. I would pay the extra cash to have the option.

Maybe there is a standard/specification, however what you classify as OAR can be and in this case is just your opinion. Others and perhaps even a majority share your opinion, however it's still just an opinion.

This movie is best watched full-time, full-screen open matte, however there is at least scene (think blue) with a framing issue.

There's no opinion about it. The director and cinematographer framed it for a specific ratio, which is the OAR. Given the time period I am certain this was 1.85:1 or something close to that, though if anyone has comments from the crew I would be happy to read them.

We're living in the 2010's, people. You need to remember that nobody can be wrong and we have to accept and respect everybody's thoughts/opinions, no matter how nonsensical they are.
