Thought I'd also mention that the packing by Network is atrocious. Just a piece of cardboard wrapped around the case, folded to make a "box". Zero protection. My set arrived totally smashed. The case is destroyed, with several pieces rattling around inside. Thankfully the discs are intact but the case won't even close now.

I contacted Network and asked if they would send me an empty replacement case so I wouldn't have to send back my whole set. Here's what I got back this morning:

"We are sorry about the condition of the item you have received. I am afraid we need to follow the standard policy and please send back the whole set via the below Freepost address. A brand new set will be sent out on receipt."

This is lousy customer service. So I have to send it all back, and wait weeks before I get the replacement, meanwhile I don't have the discs to watch, and the replacement case might arrived damaged also, or worse, the discs. At least the discs are fine. So I have to risk sending out my undamaged discs to risk getting another set with damaged discs, just because they won't send me an empty case. This is poor, poor customer service.

Last year my Gatchaman box set arrived damaged - one case arrived smashed. I contacted the company and they rushed me a replacement case right away. I didn't have to do a thing. That's what I call customer service.

With Amazon at least they send a replacement set out to you right away, so you have the discs to watch while you're waiting for the replacement, and if the replacement has some damage, you can combine the two sets and make a good set before sending the damaged set back.

So I'm going to have to buy a new Viva Elite 6-disc Case. I refuse to send this set back and risk getting damaged discs the next time around. I'm not impressed with Network's version of customer service.

Does anybody know where I can get a replacement case for this set? It's a Viva Elite 6-disc case but it's thick. I've bought Elite cases before from Casetopia but they are slim - I need the thick case that this set comes in (it seems to be around 26-28mm thick).

I went through the extras disc and took a look around.

The extras disc is 17.9GB in size. It includes a folder called "Space 1999 2 PDFs" which includes scripts for each of the 24 year 2 episodes, an episodic synopsis, an ITC flyer, a pdf on the making of the Cosmos:1999 stop-motion fan film included on this disc, and the 5 annuals from 1975 - 1979. The total size of the PDF folder is 718MB.

Here's a breakdown of the extras with a few thoughts:

- Unexposed:Behind the Scenes of Series Two (25:07) 18.3Mbps 1080p AVC 25.000fps
(Lots of outstanding behind-the-scenes footage - excellent quality)

- Stock Footage (Mute) (46:02) 16.7Mbps 1080p MPEG-2 24.000fps
(Lots of special effects footage from year 1 and 2 - excellent quality footage)

- Cosmos:1999 (13:22) 18.3Mbps 1080p AVC 29.970fps
(Amazing vintage stop-motion short film in the year two format, including music and sound effects. Source material is very old grainy 8mm and the colors are badly faded in spots, but that said, it's still very good quality. Highly recommended viewing.)

- Martin Landau Interview (44:53) 5723Kbps SD MPEG-2 25.000fps
(Very good sit-down interview with Martin Landau)

- Outtake (:27) 5428Kbps SD MPEG-2 25.000fps
(Hilarious blooper from The Bringers of Wonder)

- Promos and Trailers (10:43) 4441Kbps~ SD MPEG-2 25.000fps
(Varying quality - includes trailer for Destination Moonbase Alpha telefilm and a bunch of promotional trailers for year 2)

- Behind the Scenes:Model Shop (6:36) 4339Kbps SD MPEG-2 25.000fps
(Some nice behind-the-scenes effects filming - narration by Brian Johnson)

- Clean Titles (4:01) 18.1Mbps 1080p AVC 24.000fps
(Clean intros and outros without titles - no audio. Sadly, it's not nearly as exhaustive as year 1, and only includes shots from a few select episodes.).

- Production Audio:
- The Taybor (13:43) + (12:36) 24.000fps
- The Rules of Luton (16:06) + (14:19) + (7:02) 25.000fps
- The Mark of Archanon (6:02) + (4:09) 25.000fps
- Brian the Brain (14:26) + (14:11) + (1:19) 25.000fps
(Fascinating behind-the-scenes audio rushes - lots of alternate dialogue)

- Archive Interviews: 4769Kbps SD MPEG-2 25.000fps
- Martin Landau (5:42)
- Barbara Bain (4:29)
- Gery Anderson (4:34)
- Catherine Schell (3:17)
- Keith Wilson (4:12)
- Brian Johnson (6:42)
- Fred Frieberger (6:47)
(clips from these interviews were included on the Space:1999 Documentary by Fanderson - video quality is poor, lots of compression artifacts)

As you can see, the framerates include 24.000, 25.000 (PAL) and even 29.970 (NTSC). The Network Video logos and menu is in 24.000fps. The ITV logo is 25.000fps. My Panasonic DMP-BDT320 handles the varying framerates fine, as well as handling the region lock workaround, but I imagine the varying framerates could cause issues with some players.

The first 5 discs hold the episodes and photo galleries. The episodes and menu are all encoded in AVC 24.000fps. The photo galleries are MPEG-2 24.000fps. The Network Video logos are 24.000fps though the ITV logo is 25.000fps. The ITV logo seems to be the only thing in PAL on discs 1-5.

Disc 5 holds the year 2 episode edited to the year 1 format. I only watched a few minutes so far, but I plan to watch it in full. It's quite interesting actually. I like what they did with it so far. The episode is "Seeds of Destruction".

As far as the episodes themselves, they look every bit as stunning as year 1. Color is gorgeous, detail is amazing, the episodes are nice and bright when appropriate and the black levels are nice and deep. There has been no wire removal, which I'm fine with. The surround tracks have a nice punch to them. Music and sound effects take the stage, and dialogue is clean, crisp and clear. The 5.1 tracks put the Battlestar Galactica 1978 surround tracks to shame. The mono tracks are very much appreciated as well, along with the music-only tracks. It was a long wait, but well worth it!

One strange thing - I noticed there's a video on the bonus disc that doesn't seem to have a link for it on the menu, unless I missed it or it's an easter egg. It's a short (6:43) segment with Brian Johnson looking at some storyboards and discussing effects filming. This is different from the "Behind the Scenes:Model Shop" segment that plays from the menu.
Easter Egg maybe?

Sorry you had a damaged case, you might want to check eBay. I usually purchase a blu-ray case from there if it came in damage but not the disc.

No luck. I can't find any information about how to buy the replacement case for year 2. It doesn't seem to exist. Is it a custom size? All I see for sale for Elite cases is the slim cases which won't work for this set. It seems you can't buy a thick 6-disc Elite case, but obviously they are made because that's what this set uses.

Are you opposed to UK releases in general or do you just want the US release specifically. The Region Free S1 has been below $30 several times and under $20 shipped it seems at least once.

Are there any differences between the US and UK set? I thought I read something about the UK set not using the OAR?

That's Thunderbirds, not Space:1999. I own both the A&E and Network Space:1999 sets, and they're both in the OAR.

Aspect ratio it the same as mentioned -- also 1080/24 just like teh US set. I think most of the extras are carried over and Network added a couple new ones, but the bulk of the extras are on the DVDs (PAL) so you would need either a DVD player capable or a PC DVD player to watch the majority.

Season 2 is a different can of worms with region blocked, etc

Lowest price on Amazon I guess, but NetworkOnAir regularly has had sales on the set for Ł10 plus shipping it seems like every couple months. If you're patient it will surely be back to the lower price

Just Season 1 as far as I know.

If Network ever has another big sale, I might have to go ahead with both sets anyway. The spring sale never seem to materialize so
now putting hte chips in for the fall sale

Series 1 is region free but Series 2 is region locked but there is a workaround, check the previous page for details.
