I just use -20 because when I had the Technics THX receiver that is what it was on it.As I said some movies are louder than others and -20 is overkill.

I think it is your receiver going into protection mode. DKR is one if those movies with reference audio and I just tried the movie at 0 db with just the receiver alone. I didn't make it through the whole movie when mine shut down. When my external amp was engaged it was fine. My receiver isn't too bad either, not high end but sufficient.

Thanks, I enjoyed watching the movie again to test this. IMO, I watch movies at -5 db all the time and feel it is not overkill on my setup.

That receiver is supposed to display an error code if protection mode is triggered, and it's not showing up according to LGHaze.

Not sure what this means. Someone posted a spectral that shows it has at least one wide and blasting section.

Oh didn't know that because my receiver gave no error code so either mine didn't do it or my receiver doesn't get error codes. Probably in the higher model AVR.

Oh the term Reference was a rating level they use on another forum who reviews movies so I can see how you could be confused by that term.

I just mean that unless it has been specifically calibrated to a known standard it's not really reference. A lot of people and sites call something 'reference' to just express that it's their newest favorite.

also, how efficient are your speakers, if they are below 89 then it will take more power to drive them to a good volume. the other thing is the actual volume you are trying to drive the system to and how large the room is.

also, is the receiver inside a cabinet, does it have other components sitting on top of it or is it completely open to the free air? the more the demand and the less the cool air supply, the more likely it is that what happened will happen again.

please keep us posted.

I didn't read all of the other comments but this is exactly what I thought. Because of the LFE demand in DKR I suspect crossover issues or bad speaker connection on the sub or wires touching somewhere.

Yeah, I think I threw you off with that comment, sorry. Ralph Potts over at AVS forums, rates DKR as a rating of Reference on the audio. I was not trying to say that it was really reference. I think I even saw some of your posts there too or maybe not.

When my receiver shut down on me, it was only this movie and star wars but after I got a 2 channel amp pushing the fronts, my receiver is no longer hot or shuts down during this movie.
