Now this is where it gets utterly confusing for me...isn't this what we are SPECIFICALLY trying to avoid -- the locking up/freezing? If it IS doing this, SHOULDN'T I be emptying the P.S.? Or are you saying only empty it when there are regular crashes?

This seems so contradictory to me because on one hand, it's being said to leave the persistent storage alone, but by letting it fill up a bit, the chances of the crash get greater so it should be dumped when the freezing occurs...

Another thing, do you have BD-Live turned on? This has been know to cause issues from time to time. If it's turned on try turning it off.
It remains -- and has from day one with the player -- turned OFF.

Quote:
Do the issues you experience disappear? Also, are the issues you're experiencing with discs repeatable with the same titles or do they randomly occur?
They randomly occur. Sometimes, on titles I had no issues with prior to the problem moment...

The player shows the total space and then the available space. So it sounds like the total amount of memory has been barely used given the available memory is only off by 1 digit compared to the total memory. Thus no reason to clear the memory unless you were experiencing problems.
Yes -- that is what I was referring to, the "Available Space" versus the "Total Space" (which has always, yet again, seemed confusing and a bit contradicting to me for some reason). And yes, this is always off by just a numeral or two, and then I go ahead and clear it when I see it, under the assumption that always keeping that clear will allow less crashes and lockups...you're saying just to leave this alone and let the memory kind of "fill up"?

Check to see if you have BD-Live enabled. If so, try disabling it. If not try adding a USB thumb drive to the player and use it for persistent storage.
BD Live, as specified, is definitely always OFF. I still experience lockups at times.

Quote:
From the Setup menu select Device Setup, Persistent Storage, Storage Device and select USB Drive. Power down the player and restart. Do the problems still occur?
Don't know; will have to experiment...as I said, this is not with EVERY disc played, but more a random occurance, annoying as such even at this frequency...

The current firmware is almost a year old. Some newer titles may require updated firmware to play.
But the issue occurs with titles that are not brand-spanking-new; that's what concerns me. And, it occurs with titles that didn't give me issues prior to that...

Oppo hasn't released a firmware update for nearly a year?

Quote:
Firmware also has to be updated when studios switch to newer keys and AACS keys must be updated every 18 months so Oppo will be releasing a new firmware within the next six months if nothing other than to update the AACS keys.
Good to know; I'll do the update download immediately when that's announced. They didn't tell me anything about that via email.

For now, let's leave the persistent storage alone. Do you have a USB drive you can use for persistent storage? Let's try this first to see if it resolves the issues you're having.

As I mentioned if the problem goes away with the external USB drive then it's more likely the internal memory is a problem. If it doesn't then it leans more toward the internal memory not being a problem.

Clearing persistent storage would simply get rid of any data which is already corrupted. It won't reduce the probability of the persistent storage from getting corrupted.

Also, have you ever performed a factory reset? You should do this especially after a firmware update. I would recommend you try that as well.

So, just don't touch that in the Setup Menu for now? Don't keep emptying it, as I normally do weekly or every two/three weeks?

A reset IS performed after every firmware update, per instructions.

Correct. Do you currently have access to USB thumb drive?

Rdod,

I will check back in with this thread after some time has passed and I have left Persistent Storage alone, to report whether or not the random disc freezes have ceased or been reduced...

Thanks for your assistance.
