The lightning deals this week have been a joke. Most of them are somewhere between 2 and 5 dollars off amazon's regular price. If the prices had been anywhere near black friday week's lightning deals, I would have jumped on a lot this week because they've had good titles. Just not good sales.
Having said that, no matter what the lightning deal ends up being, anywhere around 19.99 is a great price for this collection.

I am a lifelong fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, and I watched all five of the original films in my Planet of the Apes 5-Film Collection Blu-ray set this weekend, as well as the excellent Behind the Planet of the Apes documentary that is included as a special feature with the first film.
All five movies on the Planet of the Apes 5-Film Collection are timeless, and they are still quite intense by today's standards. The political undertones are just as relevant today as they were during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the special effects still hold up amazingly well. The low budget resourcefulness of these films work in their favor these days, because the movies included no elaborate effects that would be dated to the eyes of present-day viewers. It's a testament to the effectiveness of these movies that the ape makeup for the characters withstands the scrutiny of a high definition presentation. Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and the others conveyed so much emotion with their eyes, and the makeup gave them the opportunity shine in their respective acting abilities. All five of these movies look and sound stellar on Blu-ray, with the various forest valley, desert, and city settings coming across quite brilliantly. The video shows no signs of alteration from the digital elves, and the grain level is intact to give these films a clear appearance that does not sacrifice the old-school rough-around-the-edges look that we know and love. It was a dream come true for me to see the Unrated Edition of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (my second favorite of the series behind the first film) at long last via the Blu-ray, which offers a choice between the two versions. The Unrated version is quite disturbing, with a level of violence that amps up the tension tenfold. My preferences are still with the Theatrical version, because that version ties in nicely with the subsequent Battle for the Planet of the Apes, but I am glad to have the opportunity to enjoy the Unrated version now as well. The special feature documentaries knock it over the bleachers and out of the park. Each Blu-ray includes a thorough background documentary for the respective film that is essential viewing for any serious fan of the franchise. The outstanding Behind the Planet of the Apes feature-length documentary is carried over from the old DVD set, but is included as a special feature to the first film. This set has my enthusiastic recommendation. Last edited by The Great Owl; 04-29-2013 at 01:02 PM. |
