The purpose is in the name. It is strictly for mid bass. So you will probably be using it to focus on the 40-80hz region... Never heard one of these.

It is actually used for 50-150hz.

Usually they're placed in a near field position for an improved tactile feel. You would then use the x-over on your subwoofer so that it plays 50hz and below, which the MBM obviously taking over above 50hz.

Personally I'd rather go with dual subwoofers that have a good response up to 150hz on their own without the need of an MBM. Never tried one before so who knows I might like it, don't have any plans to try one though.

I guess your thinking of trying one out?

I'm not looking into getting one,was just curious when I saw it. What's the difference if I put my Klipsch 12" next to my couch and changed the hz?

The x-over in an MBM is setup so that the output rolls off steeply under 50hz, your Kilpsch is still going to try and play a full range signal. The HSU driver is also chosen specifically for it's efficiency in the midbass region, it's much more capable of playing in the midbass range than your Klipsch.

You would have to add one of these to achieve the same type of results,

Nice explanation aces, makes sense.. So basically they make the slope drop after about 40 hz. So you would just plug the sub cable in to that crossover and then into the LFE on the sub?

+1 Note the accordian style surround on the MBM's driver. It is similar to pro audio drivers that are tuned more towards mid bass punch/SPL than deep bass extension similar to HT subs.
