For a while I had them organized with kid-friendly titles in one area and the rest in another. DVDs and blu-rays were just mixed together. They were then organized alphabetically with movies in a series grouped together. As my kids are getting a bit older and slowly able to watch a little more mature movies, I will soon be just mixing the kids movies in with mine knowing that they are more aware of what they are allowed to watch.
Toshiba 40-inch 1080p TV; Sony BDP-S590, Panasonic DMP-BDT220 (back-up); Samsung HT-D330 (5.1 surround, DVD HT w/ region-free capability); Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 250gb w/ Kinect

This is true joy in life, the being used up for a purpose recognized by yourelf as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. - George Bernard Shaw

I also keep my kids' movies in a separate rack; partly due to space restrictions; my main storage cabinet just can't hold them all

I typically keep my 3D movies together.

I keep my digibooks and non-kids', non-3D, slipcovered/box set cases together; but they are not otherwise organized.

I have my steelbooks together; then I attempted to organize the steelbooks by region - Canada vs. rest of the world, then further subdivide (Canada is Futureshop vs. non-Futureshop; RoW is currently Play.com vs. non-Play + everywhere else).

I currently have little to no organization to my regular amaray-cased blu's.

As you can see, it is a complete mess. Heaven help me if I want to locate anything

The best way to organize ones collection in my opinion is to first and foremost do so in the digital realm, then having the physical collection organized alphabetically. Having ones collection cataloged in a program such as DVD Profiler allows for sorting on the fly by any given set of criteria in just a few seconds using a computer or mobile device. Once making a selection having the physical collection sorted alphabetically will then allow any particular person, not just yourself to quickly and easily find the particular disc to be played.

I used to go for a more aesthetically pleasing way of organizing my Blu-rays. However, I recently sorted my Blu-rays into alphabetical order, and I very much prefer it this way.

Is 80's a genre?

I load my DVD's and Blu-ray's in changers as well. Pics of my changers can be found here. :-) In my case however, I don't use Sony's XMB to browse what's in a given changer. Instead I browse my DVD/Blu-ray collection and initiate playback of a given disc right on the screen of my remote control. With my Blu-ray collection specifically I've also implemented the My Movies solution. If you'd like to learn more see my post here.

At its core, alphabetically. Internally you see that movies such as the James bond series (which I only own daniel craig at this time) I alphabetize by the first in the series of the actor, then I place in chronological order (i.e. Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall in that order come between breakfast club and cast away)

For some reason I don't do the hannibal series that way...I should *Changes it now*

I will do the same for the Hunger games saga.

I should also mention, I have them alphabetized according to what they are known as (or the big title). (i.e. The incredible hulk is placed in spot between hancock and the hungergames not wherever incredible would go)

Then I have box sets (Dark knight trilogy, back to the future trilogy, die hard (quadrilogy at the moment), terminator quadrilogy) at the very end along with steelbooks (I don't have yet) and digibooks etc...basically anything not in a normal case gets placed in its own area (to include TV series which I will probably further seperate should I ever decide to buy the LOST collection.) The only digibook I own though is the big lebowski so it really is just off to the side with four box sets.

I have mine sorted alphabetically, makes it easy for me to find a movie, I just have to look in that general area to find whatever movie it is I am looking for. Also makes it easier for me to see if anyone has messed around with them or moved them around.

The majority of my collection is set up alphabetically, starting with # - Z. Then I've got these seperate groupings like box sets, television, steelbooks, disney/animated, general interest, whatever...

So far it's just:

Unwatched films/boxsets together
Watched films + Partially watched sets/films on top of the watched films
Watched boxsets

That's good enough for now but I'll likely need more organization soon.

I used to have separate shelves for TV Shows, Boxed sets, Anime, Foreign & regular movies, but I ditched all of my DVDs and have a few hundred less Blu-ray's so now everything is in alphabetical order pretty much. A few bigger boxes don't fit where they are supposed to so I set them up on a different shelf and I try to group all movies from the same series (ie. all Fast & Furious movies will be filed under "F" instead of the second movie under "2").
