If you intend to watch on 1080/24p, then it does not matter, picture quality should be identical. If not (1080/60p) differences are so minimal especially when watching HD. However, the 790 is much, much, much faster and has apps. It is up to you.

Default possible solution

New member here as I am having the same problem as most in this topic: Invalid disc error with BD's. After reading that the update did not seem to help and some actually urging not to not take this approach, I had an idea. So for those of you that actually have more or less bricked your unit, you may wish to give this a try...please be careful as the wires and plugs are small and can be easily damaged and remove the plug from the wall!!!

Unplugged the unit from the wall and removed the lid to gain access to the internals. You will see the black box that contains the drive, some ribbon cables coming from underneath and two cables runs across the top of the drive. I unplugged the two top cables, now the drive is unobstructed. Removed two screws from the top of the drive and four at the base. Backed out the drive gently leaving the ribbon cables attached. I now lifted the four tabs and took the lid off the drive. Found a magnetic centering hub in the lid and removed it by twisting the cover plate from the top. Replaced drive in chassis and bolted it down with the four screws. Reconnected wiring running above the drive.

I powered up the unit and pressed the open button to insert a disc. After it was drawn back inside the chassis, I quickly placed the magnetic hub in the center of the disc. To my surprise it worked. Last night purchased Oblivion and Taken 2. It's as if nothing had ever happened- the player works just as before the invalid disc problem appeared.

Now, those two cable runs are just hanging there above the spinning disc: this will not do. A solution would be to enlarge the hole in the top half of the drive enclosure so that it can be put back on. At least then, there's only a two-inch hole instead of the whole lid being gone.

So is the lid warping from the interior heat and causing the hub to drag or something? I asked Sony in an online chat on their site, if the drive(BPX-1) was available for purchase. Answer: no

Hey that's very interesting. I have the BDP-S560 which is very similar to this model came out in the same year etc. only difference that I know of is that it has limited wi-fi for updating (only).

Anyway, my unit was the Sherman tank of BR players until I mistakenly "upgraded" the firmware to 11, then it started getting invalid disc errors. Even sent it down under warranty (cost me $15 shipping to Laredo, TX for "repair"... it's largely been replaced and after the warranty expired I cracked it open to see if I could figure out anything, and at least clean it as that was one of the theories as to why the Invalid discs was occurring.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A YOUTUBE VIDEO OF EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Or some photos. I think that would really really help. If it's a steady video and not a hand held (like if you have a tri-pod or a chair with books or a box stacked on top it would be amazing to see exactly what you are doing. I'm with you up to a point, but if I try to go in without seeing it, I'm more likely to make a mistake.

P.S. I was posting about this problem over on AVS forums I'll link that in with a couple of the posts of my BDP-s560's pictures etc.
Here were the pictures I took way back then of my BDP-s560 internal drive.

I was ALSO working on trying either by using the Service Menu or by what I found on the service repair manual PDF, find a way to re-flash the firmware like they do at the Laredo, TX repair facility.

I found a chip that references this in the pdf schematic, and I found the part of the service menu that deals with this.
I ASS-U-MED for the longest time that the problem was when I upgraded from 08 firmware to 011. It was working perfectly prior to this but I wasn't using it heavily for some time after it, so it may not have had anything to do with the firmware update, and I just latched on to that.

Thanks for your post, hope to see what you are doing visually. DA1745

I don't know which version I had before but after the update I had version "11", aka not the latest "14", which was a little confusing. Anyway, I tried the Bond discs and still no change. The strange thing was that other titles seemed affected now that worked fine before, for example Jaws, Gladiator and Transformers refuse to play now. I updated to version "14" via an upgrade disc as instructed by Sony's e-support, but the problematic discs refuse to be recognized by the player.

I haven't tried all of my discs but most of them seem to work fine. Before this I updated my player more than a year ago. Is there a possibility to get older versions of firmware? The problem seems to be connected with these newer versions. Anybody experiencing similar symptoms??

How does this happen?
It just seems like a very odd problem since I changed nothing about the player and the discs themselves are perfect.

I like Sony products, and I like the fact that the basic functions of my TV, sound bar, and player can be controlled from one Sony remote. But perhaps it's time to try something new.
My unit is the BDP-S560 but I and several others wrote about the invalid discs.
My experience was quite similar. Firmware 008 was a ROCKSTAR 100% playability.
Updated via the internet (not a rookie) but that was a STUPID split second mistake (i do not do updates via the internet normally). 011 although it stated it was successfully installed began giving me the invalid error on discs that had previously played fine under 008.

I'm LEARY of trying 014 even if Sony ships me out a disc. And I'm interested in what the person posted on 8-9-2013 about the spindle and I'm hoping they returns with a video or some pictures to show exactly what they've done. Wouldn't that be a peach if it was a mechanical issue all along or at least could be corrected physically?

When I first watched the Catching Fire it played fine but when I played it for the 2nd time the player showed, "cannot read" / "invalid". I also put Casino Royale Collector's Edition and Ratatouille blu-rays it showed the same thing but for The Proposal it played fine. Firmware is up to date according to Sony website.

I own a Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Player. Anyone who has the same player had this issue before with Catching Fire or other blu-ray titles?

Have you tried cleaning the BD lense with one of those BD disc cleaners?

My bdp-s360 started doing this for every blu I put in it. Once I used my bd dvd cleaner it cleaned the lens and all is well.

No, I haven't. I need to try that. For some reason never thought of it. Thanks.

Same here with certain blu-rays. What type of cleaner brand did you used?

Thanks for posting. Long story shorter, I have both the Sony S360 & Panasonic BD60 I've been trying. I'm keeping the Panny! I got it for $249 on sale at Best Buy.
