LOL. No. I'm still insisting they watch the first two. Hopefully that would make a difference.

God I love these films. Can't stop thinking about Midnight. Would have caught it again theatrically if it lasted more than a week and my theater wasn't an hour away. Desperately want all three on Blu-ray. Midnight will surely get a Blu-ray release right away when it's released so I'm hoping the other two will get them right along with it.

One of the best trilogies of all-time. Though if they eventually make a fourth I won't be able to call it that anymore.

Do it! Do it! Do it! I wonder what it would be like to cruise through this trilogy like that though. I imagine it would be exhausting. I saw the first probably a couple of years before the second was released, and then saw that right away when it was released on DVD. I would think they'd be better with some distance in between but since I didn't see them all together I can't really say. Regardless I urge you to watch them A.S.A.P. so you can catch the third on the big screen.

If anyone's interested, there's an original one-sheet poster up on eBay signed by Hawke, Delpy and Linklater. $250. Not sure if I can post the link here, but just searching ebay for signed Before Midnight poster should get you there.

Interesting. I thought it basically showed that they were meant to be.

To me, romance is there in the notion that, regardless of the circumstances, they are bonded. So I'm clearly in the realm of jamesdevil moreso than amoergosum.

I think the first two films show the "ease" of romance - how it's easy to get caught up in it when the circumstances are already right for it. I think the third shows the "work" of romance...which I, personally, find all the more romantic. You know - they're fighting for their love, not just letting it happen to them.

I felt the second half of this movie was the greatest part of the three movies so far. The first half was a bit meandering and inconsequential and the main two characters were a bit in the backround

Any thoughts on whether there'll be another one? I hope there is. At the end I was kind of wanting a bit more to the story. And I also think that they have become different people in each movie, and the meaning of their lives has changed accordingly, who says people won't be interested in the lives of a 50 year-old writer and his activist wife with grown up children. The same struggles they have at that stage will be just as interesting I think.

That would absolutely do it. I still don't understand why someone would bother going to this without seeing the first two . It's not going to mean as much.

Hmmm just watched the second movie.

Liked it, but it felt a little 'forced'......I dunno, thought 1st one was better.

I agree, it's a little too much calling back, it lacks the magic of the first because they don't really talk about much in generalisation. Midnight is far more stellar and feels like a bigger progression.
Remaining Films of 2014 I'll check out: Men, Women and Children. St. Vincent. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Dumb and Dumber To. Exodus: Gods and Kings. Big Eyes. Unbroken.
Best Films of the Year so far: Boyhood. Calvary. Mr. Turner. Mommy. Frank. Godzilla. Nightcrawler. Gone Girl. Interstellar. The Raid 2. The Rover. The LEGO Movie. Under the Skin.

I find this very interesting because I think the context of how one sees the films is going to play a lot into one's perception of them. Seeing them for the first time today, knowing there are three films, is a vastly different experience than seeing them as they were released, not knowing you would see more from these characters or having any idea what their fate would be. For me it was the latter experience and I feel that Before Sunset is my favorite in no small part because of that. I can't say whether I would've liked it the best if I had known, more or less, the outcome due to the existence of a sequel.

All three films explore to some extent the idea of realism vs. romanticism in relationships, but Before Sunrise is very heavily weighted towards romanticism while Before Midnight is very heavily weighted towards realism. I think Before Sunset is the most balanced between those viewpoints and left me with the best impression of Jesse and Celine as well as the sense that they could truly have a lasting relationship (which to me was quite a bit of progress). I couldn't easily discount that notion as the youthful idealism/inexperience of Before Sunrise nor as the familiarity and family/fiscal responsibility of Before Midnight.

I like Before Midnight, but its realism felt a bit brutal to me, particularly towards Celine's character.
