Samsung announces 75-inch ES9000 smart TV

Anyone looking to fill half of their lounge with Samsung LCD just got a new size to choose. The 75-inch ES9000 is the bigger brother of the ES8000 that we saw earlier this year and ahead of the official launch in Korea, we managed to get an early eyes-on at a Samsung event held yesterday in London. In short, if you loved the LED-backlit display of the 55-inch model, you're going to adore the ES9000, which features the same smart TV brains alongside a retractable webcam unit housed on the top edge. The picture was pleasingly rich and sharp -- presumably due to the aforementioned backlighting and the ES series' edge-to-edge design. The bezel is a mere 7.9mm and Samsung has decided to coat the frame in a gentle Rose Gold coating which, due to the TV's slightly shady location, was a little trickier to pick out. That premium finish is matched by a premium price tag, however, and will hit checkbooks for 19.8 million won (around $17,450). Despite the UK appearance, retailer John Lewis (which hosted the event) couldn't confirm whether retail models would be coming to its stores in the future. But if you can afford 75 inches of TV, you can also afford a quick flight to Seoul to pick one up.

$17K is a lot for only a 75" set. The Sharp 90" for $10K is a better deal. Even the Panasonic 85" PF12 for $20K seems like a better deal.

Why the heck do these companies even bother making these expensive tv's? Nobody can afford them at those costs.

There are people who can afford them and they do buy them. Even in today's economy there are still many people who's income well exceeds 6 figures.

Really, I paid $2,000.00 for my projector and the screen is 106" And the picture is just as good & the Blacks are better....

Here is a screen shot with my camera that is 8 feet wide.

I hear ya. I'd like to think most of them aren't that foolish though. I would give my dad as an example, he clears around 5K a week, but if I told him he should look into buying one of these, he'd tell me I need my head checked.

i can remember the first plasmas costing anywhere from $10,000.00 - $12.000.00 when they were first released to the public.

and look at the prices now for sets that are bigger than the first ones at those crazy prices (IF i remember correctly, 40" was the biggest one i saw). and i remember thinking that no one in their right mind would ever pay that much for a tv.

of course as the technology advanced and the market got more infused with those new products the prices started to drop.

so seeing an led tv at that size for that price isn't so much a shock to me.

as time goes, the price will go down as it does with just about everything else.

The people that can afford these are the same people that wouldn't want to ruin the design of their home by altering it to accommodate a projection system. The open floor plans with tons of natural lighting that is so desirable high end home designs simply are not conducive to a projection system. I'd love to have a projection system... but I am not giving up either of my guest rooms, and I'm not sheetrocking the big picture window in my living room... so I will always just purchase the largest best quality tv's I can afford.

Well it looks like it's going to be priced a whole lot less than that $17,450 South Korean price. It'll be available here in August for $9,999. I hope this price difference between the South Korean Market and the US Market is the same for LG's 84" 84LM9600 which will be available in Korea in a limited supply of 84 units in August for $22,000! Hopefully once it makes its way here in November it'll sell for no more than $15,000. At least one can hope.
