Alternatively, shouldn't you be able to use the subtitle button on your remote?

There are only English subtitles on this release, by the way.

I just received an e-mail from Digital Element. Stalker and Solaris will be released in 2010 or 2011.

Wow!!! That is awesome news. And we don't have to worry about another extended/alternative version being out there, awaiting a possible release.

I remember seeing Stalker in the cinema when it first came out and being blown away by it. The beginning is just astounding to look at. Seen it in the cinema since but one of those I couldn't bear to watch on DVD. Now, on my 92" screen, it'll be like a dream come true. This is even better news, for me, than the Apocalypse Now release. Let me live that long lord ;-) ...a bit longer would be even better...

makes sense.
I never think about things like that.
as far as other Tarkovsky--awesome news!
"Stalker" is incredible for sure.
I have to think Artificial Eye will release it eventually in the UK also.

Tarkovsky's opinion aside, anyone like the 186 min cut over the 205 min released by CC? The tartar raid sequence made a strong impression when I first saw Andrei Rublev on DVD, and this cut failed to live up to that impression.

I last saw it in the cinema in 2005 and it was timed at 180mins. I've never seen the CC edition. Did it get a cinema release?

Didn't find the mere 3 hour version wanting - though the gf bravely sat through it I think the trailer would be too long for her!

Not to my knowledge. The elements were barely in good enough condition on the Criterion DVD (the longer print had been smuggled out of the USSR and hid), so I don't think a 35mm presentation would have been watchable without further extensive restoration.

I believe the USSR cut is the only one we will see in HD for quite a while, and perhaps we will never see the "Dom Kino" Criterion version in any better form.

Hmm, that's interesting. In a way, that should make it easier if anyone's thinking of holding off buying in case the CC version is released (i.e. me). It looks like the only problem might be subtitles, a new version might come with a better translation.

Anyone care to comment on the subtitles?

I think that it's mostly the fact that on forums like these you have real movie lovers, so any great movie from anywhere is interesting.

That's a strange question. Are we not supposed to like cinema from the former U.S.S.R?
Tarkovsky, while having problems getting his films shown in the USSR and with censorship (and that never happens in the west) did emigrate but, crucially, didn't denounce or disown the films he'd made in the Soviet Union. If they were just propaganda pieces (which they obviously are not) surely he'd have disowned them?

so they are doing the distribution for Mosfilm?
that's what it would appear.
btw: I wish you could click on the individual discs for more info--
I'd love to be able to see what all they have released.
doesn't seem to be any way to get any additional info from what I can see.

This seems to be an authoring house, or rather a company that actually makes the BD and DVD discs from the materials given to them by the distributor (which, in the case of this Russian BD of Andrei Rublev, is Mosfilm). It would seem that the page you refer to is simply a showcase of the titles they have authored, but they would have no control over what content is offered on what disc, since that is the choice of the distributor. In other words, this company is not the place to look for upcoming releases or specifications.
