The Amazon HD stream isn't bad at all. If this doesn't come out in the next year I am going the Vudu HDX route but I would much, much prefer a Blu-ray with never seen extras. For whatever reason I connect this movie with Weird Science. A double pack of those two movies would just rock.

So, what does everybody think about this being remade?

IMDB has it listed as in development; I think it's been that way since 2010.
With Ron Howard attached as a Producer, I don't think they're messing around.
It also wouldn't surprise me to find out they have been in ongoing discussions with Val Kilmer for years just to reappear in the new one, and his respectable reluctance could be what single-handedly keeps this remake/reboot stalled. Jon Gries participation is perhaps of equal importance.

Still, as much as I'd dislike to see this remade, if it helps bring new fans to the original, thus catalyzing the release of the original on blu-ray, then I guess I can make peace with it.
Okay... show me.

It is nice to think that a remake might spur the release of the original on blu ray.
Remakes typically are no good, and I wouldn't expect much. There is potential though, as the movie is still very relevant. It would also be cool to see older versions of Lazlo and Chris. The most difficult thing would probably be replicating the affect of the soundtrack, as today's music is pretty dissimilar.

While any classic soundtrack from decades past is for the most part impossible to replicate, it's not impossible for there to be an accessible modern interpretation on the music. In this case, we're talking about some 80's classics that have served to inspire many other musicians that have infused that style into their own.
Here are some modern-day artists who've made some music that I consider to have a pure infusion of 80's, while still allowing it to be new:

I agree with what you say. I am also familiar with most of the artists you suggested, and they're not bad at all. I just think the music contributed a lot to the overall impact of the film. And that what I'm afraid of is the direction in music/production. And I hope, if remade, they give enough consideration to it.

Recently another user, "jonali," posted in the Scandinavian section about a September 14th, 2015 blu ray release from Sony Pictures!!

Here is a link to his original post: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=261882 - appears it will be released in Sweden.

I searched online but could not find much information. What are the chances of a Region A/1 release?

There's no guarantees, but Sony releases in general are usually region free.

There's no good reason this movie should be delayed any longer.

Come on Sony Pictures!
6 more months to make this an official 30th anniversary release!

It's a moral imperative.
