No it's not. I only get links for the DVD.

That's a link to download a torrent of an iso file, not to buy a copy. Once again, I see no sign that Cosmos is commercially available on Blu-ray.

Fact: Much of Cosmos was shot on standard-def video in the early 80s. Chances of a highdef version are about as good as me having lunch on Mars today.

Fact: Searching for "cosmos" on Amazon, blu-ray.com and DVDAF.com returns no blu-ray version of Cosmos. Period. End of story.

Inescapable Conclusion: There is no legimate Blu-ray version of Cosmos available anywhere nor would I hold my breath expecting one anytime soon.

Has this fact changed over the past year or so?

Nope. Don't expect it to anytime soon, either. The limitations of the original production make this an unlikely candidate for BD.

Why? The original was done on 1980-era NTSC video. A BD version can't look any better than the DVD. The source material just isn't up to it.

I found this after a friend and fellow stargazer told me that he read in the newspaper about a "Cosmos" remake.

Maybe a Blu-ray edition of the original might become available close to the remakes premier.

As long as a remake is as well made, along the lines of the original. You know, thoughtful and insightful. As opposed to 30 second audio/visual bites that are blasted out assuming you have ADD or something.

In answer to a previous query...
I believe that exterior footage was recorded on film and all the studio work was done on video.

Thanks to the late and great Carl Sagan not only do we have Cosmos - we also have his contribution to the movie Contact and his ongoing science project SETI. While Cosmos may be dated, Contact is still a fresh endeavor.

Apologies for diggin up an old thread but I was googling around like other peeps hoping this would be on blu. I watched Cosmos as a kid and it blew me away. Soon after I had a telescope, an Astronomy magazine subscription and I was exploring the galaxy. Carl had a way of evoking great wonder and mystery with the way he explained things and that passion pushed astrophysical concepts to the masses. It was a fantastic series and still is. Maybe this wouldn't benefit from an HD upgrade but a remake would be awesome, maybe an interactive menu where one of his colleagues could come on and talk about what has changed in the science but keeping with Carl's original theme. Just a thought.

With the new Cosmos premiering last week, I watched some of the episodes of the original Cosmos on National Geographic Channel. Since it's an HD channel, the episodes were upconverted but were clearly not HD. Not sure how the show was originally filmed but a blu-ray restoration would be great. It's an important show.
