Can someone please tell me how to turn on the subtitles? When I click on audio options, there is nothing dealing with subtitles. I can only change the audio from mono to lossless or commentary. Where are the subtitle or language options? I have significant hearing loss. I have other criterion blu-rays and they all have the subtitle options under the audio option category. Thanks for any help.

What kind of BD player do you have? I think Criterion's foreign-language releases all include a pop up menu option for subtitles. But I believe English-language releases do not. These are only selectable through the "subtitle" button on the remote. But some companies (Panasonic?) do not include the button. God only knows why not. I think for Panasonic players, you need to hit the "Display" button and change subtitle options from there.

Thanks very very very much for your help!!! I have a panasonic blu-ray player, and did what you told me to! I've got the subtitles working! The other criterion blus I have are all foreign language films, so now I know why this release doesn't have the pop-up menu option. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Indeed, while all non-English speaking movies have a real "subtitles" options from the BD menu, for English-speaking movies as On The Waterfront, you need to turn them on manually through the player. It is the standard for Criterion, so you'll know for future purchases.

Watched this yesterday. Brando's performance was just great. I know we have some good actor's now, but this movie really shows what a talent he was. Got to love watching the old movies. Although, all you ever hear is "they don't make'em like they used to". Currently watching The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Agreed. And can I just say the short piece on the aspect ratios was absolutely fascinating. It's so packed with information in its short 5 minute runtime I had to watch it twice consecutively. I thought it would help me select which one I wanted to watch first, but it actually made the choice all the harder, particularly since it so articulately details the positives and negatives of each one.

Anyone else notice some audio clicks in the surround audio on disc 1? Mine makes two clicks/pops at 1:39:40 and 1:39:48. No huge deal, just curious about it...

Does anyone know if the German release of this film will feature the same transfer?
