I have the feeling the official reviewer got his technical notes influenced by his love for the movie, specially the sound one.
On the video transfer, I agree... I don't think Ben-Hur could look much better. But the sound, while a quite good upgrade to 5.1, is not worth 5/5 compared to other transfers of "old" material, like e.g. Lawrence of Arabia which comes only 3 years later. At best 4/5. The weaknesses of the move to surround sound can be heard in many parts of the movie, a good example being the famous race scene. The sound is not enveloping, it's from fixed sources often badly following the movement, if at all. Mind you, I don't say the audio is bad. But it's unfair to other, much better transfers and surround upgrades to rate this one 5/5 in my opinion. No hard feelings Last edited by Korrigan; 03-28-2013 at 08:52 PM. |

Yeah, I guess a simple "points out of 5" score is a blunt tool at best. Some reviewers seem to apply it as if it's an objective measure of an audio track, regardless of what it came from, and others as if it's an achievement considering the specs of its source.
To me, it seems Ben-Hur tries to do more in its audio conversion into a surround spectrum than Lawrence generally does, which may serve to expose Ben-Hur's audio shortcomings (by modern expectations) more. So I'm not sure — points for trying, maybe? |
