The TCM film fest has had the premieres for most of the major classic catalog restrorations for the past 4 years.
And ALL of those movies show up on bluray within 12-15 months of playing at TCM.
I am willing to bet, that that it will be on 3D bluray within the year.

Can't wait to see this on the big screen of the Chinese in 3D in April

Would home video distribution of this now fall to Warner Bros? It would seem to bode well for an actual BR3D release if George Feltenstein and Co had their hands on it.

George didn't make any mention of it durring the Dial M 3D screening at the chinese 6 back in Sept, when he mentioned the other titles WB was going to release in 3D blu this year.

Did the 2D release go to WB with the other catalog titles that WB aquired on Jan 1st? If so then its not out of the realm of possibilties that the 3D version would have as well. fingers crossed durring the introduction they will mention a upcoming Bluray release when it screens at TCM in April.

Ah-ha! Blu-ray.com shows the recent triple feature of Hondo / Once Upon a Time in the West / True Grit at Warner Bros:

Did George mention any upcoming classic 3D releases other than House of Wax at the Dial M screening? The only other title I've seen listed as coming is the Wizard of Oz conversion.

I saw it tonight and it looked pretty wonderful. There are a few sections where they seemed to be working from weak material, but 85% of it makes you feel like you right there with Wayne.

I read somewhere that they had some problems filming the 3D on location. I seem to remember that a camera or two broke and so not all the shots were in true 3D.

I think the 3D films from the 50's are amongst the best looking and I'll be getting this if its released on 3D bluray for sure. The only other western from the 50's that I've seen in 3D is "Taza, Son of Cochise" and the 3D is spectacular in that one. Westerns are perfect for 3D with their panoramic landscapes and open spaces.

Default Hondo 3D

Having heard that there were no plans to release Hondo on 3D Blu-ray (I'm not sure why), I made sure to catch a screening of it at MoMA as part of their mini-festival of 3D movies. I believe they're also screening Kiss Me Kate, which I have, and I skipped the 3D Rarities because that disc is on its way to me with ALL of the shorts.

There was an odd projection issue that caused everyone's skin tones to be really bright red, so after a few minutes, they stopped and had to restart the movie after fixing whatever the problem was. Didn't think the desert sun would be THAT harsh!

But once the color was adjusted, the film looked pretty good. The print could still use some work, but overall it was solid, and the 3D was quite nice. Lots of lovely vistas of the desert, and the director made sure to place objects in the foreground of many shots in order to enhance the sensation of depth. And of course, there were a handful of rather effective pop-out moments, but as part of fight scenes, they didn't seem that gimmicky. And one arrow that flew into the audience actually caught me by surprise!

The main issue was that there were about four or five sections where the 3D disappeared. Oddly, the film didn't just go 2D for those sections, but went flat and recessed deep into the screen. It was kind of distracting and during one particularly lengthy one, I felt the beginnings of eyestrain. Not sure why it didn't just go flat. I think it was that depth that was causing the strain.

I don't know why this movie isn't being planned for home release in 3D, but if they did, it would be nice if they could fix those sections. At the very least, make sure that the 2D sections are simply flat instead of straining the eye with the weird depth. And if the 3D elements are actually lost to the winds of time, it would be cool if Warner Bros. cared enough about the film to go in and convert those 2D shots to match the 3D ones. But I know that would be above and beyond for a studio. We're lucky to see these old films on 3D Blu when we get them.

Of course, there's nothing quite like seeing a classic 3D movie on the big screen with an appreciative audience!

Many of the Golden Age 3-D features have a shot or two that are flat due to camera malfunctions. There's an entire sequence in HONDO that goes flat for that reason. They were on location in Mexico with the brand new WB All-Media rig and the camera still had issues. The Duke was not happy and sent Jack Warner more than one angry telegram, "Send me a camera that works!"

There's a section in DOOM TOWN that goes flat for a minute or so for the same reason. These were new cameras out in the field. In our case, Greg Kintz opted to leave the footage completely flat. The restoration team at HONDO set that footage back a little within the stereo window giving a slight illusion of depth, even though it's a flat image. If I were calling the shots, I would not have tried to fake it.

WB had nothing to do with the restoration, it was done by Gretchen Wayne and the Estate. They own the rights.

There's more information in our article: http://www.3dfilmarchive.com/home/hondo-3-d-release

Thanks for that well-researched article! I also wish they'd just left the footage flat, because by trying to set it back into the window, it created a little eyestrain for me. Especially in that one sequence in the tent which went on longer than the other few 2D scenes which were more like just a couple of shots.

But its only available on Panasonic - (I don't think they make 3D sets anymore), Vizio - (they don't have 3D in their new sets) and LG 3D TV's. Samsung is supposed to add it in the future.

This is exactly why all 3D movies need to be made available on 3D blu ray... I'd buy this one in a heartbeat on disc...

Well, fortunately for me, I have 3-D in my Vizio (one of the last 2014 models). I checked last night and 3-DGo DOES have "Hondo" available. I plan to watch it this weekend!!
And thanks to all on this thread for their comments. I know now what to look for quality-wise in the presentation.
And I'd buy this one on blu-ray in a second!!
