It's also comparing to an anamorphic PAL superbit, pretty much the best quality DVD could do. The Blu-ray easily wins in the little details of the transfer that aren't shrouded in shadow - http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich

I watched this not too long ago on my front projector and thought - all things considered - it looked fine. Yes, it's quite soft and rather dark, but I think a lot of it just how the movie was made especially given the opticals, etc. With that said, I would be curious of how a remaster would look. The colors are different than the DVD, but visually they seemed fine to me as I always thought the DVD pushed too much orange.

For starters, a remaster could improve the grain structure and make it look like the best of Criterion and Arrow releases which have fine grain and detail.
Most wanted Blurays: All classic Disney animation films restored to their original look (with grain), without any re-imagining, Raintree County, Star Wars OT, Sissi Trilogy, Spacecamp, Spacehunter: adventures in the forbidden zone, Maurice, Explorers, Runaway, Mayerling, Supergirl, True Lies, Abyss, King Solomon's Mines, The Philadelphia Experiment (1984), Death in Venice, Madonna Blond Ambition Tour

Looking at the caps, the blu-ray looks better to my eyes. It's a tad darker but the uptick in detail is definitely noticeable. The cinematography is soft but the blu still beats the superbit DVD!

At least it's AVC encoded.

I don't remember where I had seen some screenshots, but in one scene, due to the dark picture an optical effect is vanished (the juxtaposition of diary to the scene). You can't see the letters of the diary while initially you could.

edit:Oh, here you are:

So, i don't think the intended look was the one of the bluray, because otherwise why they would put themselves in all that trouble to make that effect? Just so as not to be visible?

here's a direct comparison:

I've owned a few releases of this film from original RCA/Columbia Laser to the Criterion Laserdisc release, the Superbit DVD and BD edition.
The only scene in the current BD that bothers me is the garden scene with Mina and Lucy - all the foliage is grey, not green as in previous versions. The flowers too are drained from color. The rest of the film seems ok and well saturated.

As many have said over the years since the release, this film needs a new scan/transfer......

One of my favorite films, but I have to say the DVD is a lot more pleasing to my eyes than the Blu-ray.

That's true, I could barely see just a little of the writing while looking hard for it when I watched it on my JVC. Something went wrong there.

Comparing this screenshot and the crawling down the wall from caps-a-holic with the UltraHD on amazon, the UHD is definitely not as dark. Looks pretty damn good actually.
