Spent most of the pennies I had on the VC & PSU. Now if I was buying everything, I would've went Ivy Bridge.

I think most buying the x79 are those that want x16/x16 and maybe x16/x16/x16 SLI or CrossFireX as the Z68/Z77 boards do x16/x8 or x8/x8 SLI or CrossFireX.
lol yeah, I've stuck with Asus ever since Abit went downhill in quality (and then vanished) and they still make some of the best boards. My video card is still working strong and I'm gonna wait till the next gen gpu's come out so I can grab a 600 series Geforce on the cheap

Abit, Epox and Iwill disapearred. I owned all at least once. What was the name of the company whose boards were very bright and advertised LAN party rigs? I believe it was DFI. I think they're gone too.

smart Idea, tried that, it gets into the setup menu and then flys out with "no device drives were found. make sure that the installation contains the correct drivers, then click ok". sticks me there every time.

right now I'm just giddy. upgrading from a 4 year old E8400 to this setup is INSANE!!!. I'm thoroughly enjoying the crap out of it. and the new BIOS setup??? OMG, ASUS just took the cake for user friendliness.

i usually upgrade once every 2 years ish (at the most) so this is a 4.5 year old machine that I upgraded. I haven't seen a performance increase like this in a LONG time. gives me a nerd woody

I didn't go out of the way to insult you, I've been doing my own research and pretty much everyone I'm talking to on the forums all don't think x79 is worth crap for the next few years. sure it's the future but "future" stuff is always 10% increased performance for 3x the price. "present" day tech is usually 1/3 - 1/2 the price and is much more mainstream. and as I said, yes it IS the high end stuff, but as I said it's the "elitist" section that will coexist with the 1155 boards till they die out.

as for my statement about being a computer tech, it means that I DO see real world machines on a daily basis and believe you me, even for gamers and the such the x79 boards aren't even a CONSIDERATION. sure they have their uses but are overkill for everyone but specific purposes at this point in time. You mentioned that you may use this for 10+ years, but in MY experience and purpose upgrading once every 2-3 years max is much more beneficial since video cards , cpu's and processors become a NASTY bottleneck in that time period for games and rendering etc. My only "advice" on this thread was making sure I hadn't missed anything in my research. As per all the responses and knowing that 3 years is the max between now and the time I'll upgrade another grand into my machine I'm pretty sure I have.

while I haven't kept up on the mobos and proc's the last couple of years I HAVE kept very close tabs on the ram. quad channel ram may be nice on paper , but real world performance is a WHOLE nother ball of wax. right now, just like triple channel memory it's a small performance increase and really isn't worth crap IMO. I mean if you wanna pay for that tiny increase in performance go right ahead, but I'll save my money for actual real world results. will I ever get a 2011 socket board? probably yes if it REALLY is around till 2015 (which is probably when I'll do another complete rebuild), but as I said before for MY purpose, I see no benefit to getting an x79 board when really the only people who need such things are the extreme over clockers and system crunchers

my personal opinion is that "future proofing" for the computer world is pretty much nonexistant past a 2 year period. everything we have will be sub par within a year and obsolete within 2. while I COULD keep it running past 3 or 4 years I find it wasteful to throw money at something that's that old anyways when I can just rebuild and have something of that generation.
Lol dont take my comments the wrong way please it was not my intention to degrade you in any way. Sometimes it is hard to convey things over an online forum im sure you can relate to that.

You made the decision you wanted to noone can dog that, its not like your going to see a huge monumental omg x386 to i7 difference between what i suggested and what you actually built they are both very good systems. I mean hell since I posted my initial response to you the extreme 11 is actually getting horrid reviews and people are still saying the Asus R4E decimates it. I would still no matter what make sure you get Ivy with PCIE 3.0 for when you you buy your new video card.

Enjoy your system im sure your gonna have fun tweaking it

lol, no offense meant either way bro. the internet sucks for conveying emotions. and yes I'm going into nerd heaven tweaking the crap out of everything now. I think the biggest jump I'm experiencing isn't the processor jump but the insane speeds of that SSD

Dood those SSD are the shit I tossed one in my AMD 1090t build and honestly its buying me a few years with that PC, my dad did the same thing with his dual core laptop and hes loving it. I cant wait till i drop the cash for my build may start next month only thing for me is going to be if I slowly do my water cooling loops or not, as thats going to add an extra $1200 to the system

lol, that's an understatement. I haven't experienced load times like these SSD's EVER

ended up with the ...

corsair carbide 400r case (cannibalized a couple extra fans from my old case to supplement it)
EVO 212 cooler master cpu cooler
Samsung SATA 22x dvdrw drive
Asus P8Z77-V LK mobob
Intel I2600k
Crucial M4 128 gb SSD
WD 1.5 TB hard drive (storage from old machine)
Samsung 640 gb HD (storage from old machine)
16 gigs of PC 1333 ram G.Skill Ripjaw series with 10-10-10-30 timings
re-using my old 9800 gtx + from my old build since I'm NOW dead broke. probably gonna upgrade it with something in the $200-$240 ish range so I'm looking at the Geforce 560 or 570
