The set is awesome, the book and the bonus disc are really great. I had to get both sets of course, it’s my favorite horror franchise.

Rotten Tomatoes has strange scores for the Phantasm films. They rate Ravager as the second best in the series, while part 2 has the lowest score. The audience score has Ravager as the worst and part 2 as the second best. I trust audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes much more than critics’ scores.

Yeah.... audience is correct, in my opinion. Ravager isn't completely horrible, but its a real shame that's how the series ended.

Can't believe the set was released a year ago. It's a highly prized item in my collection for sure. Not sure why it went OOP so soon after release but I treat it as I'd do a priceless artifact.

I'm sure some will balk at me rating 2 over the original, but I find it easily the most entertaining, though I also get much enjoyment from 1, 3 and 4. For me, the original is easily my second favorite after 2 and 4 is a strong entry as well that gets better with rewatches.

I think this will always be how I assess and rank the series (2, 1, 4, 3 and 5). It's amazing how 2 is so rewatchable and enjoytable every time. I'm sure me rating it as number one might be controversial to some but for me it's by far the most entertaining and was a height the series peaked at.

PHANTASM ranking:

1. PHANTASM

2. PHANTASM: OBLIVION

3. PHANTASM III

4. PHANTASM: RAVAGER

5. PHANTASM II

I should say as just a movie I really enjoy part 2, but due to studio meddling (recast Mike, removal of most dream scenes) it lacks the more surreal feel of the rest of the series.

No idea the set was limited to such few pieces. It's insane the prices it's going for now.

Series rank: 2, 1, 4, 3, 5. The first two can go either way. Alien / Aliens is a really apt comparison. 4 took a while to grow on me. It's very low-budget, but has some interesting ideas. 3 is too silly, and 5 is SyFy-level trash.

Part 2 Mike is a lot better than the whiny b!tch he becomes in the other sequels.

As much as I like the story, direction, and effects on II, the studio interference/alternate casting of Mike also puts this one at the bottom for me. The Phantasm movies have a great fluidity, but it's interrupted in II, and you can feel the shift in tone. Coscarelli easily reigns it back in with III, but I'll just never appreciate II as much for these reasons.
BLU-RAY WISH/WANT LIST

Brainscan, Surviving the Game, Blood Frenzy, Narrow Margin, the Good Thief, After Hours, Rough Cut, Red Eye, Fire in the Sky, Stay Tuned, the Keep, Fade to Black, Dolly Dearest, the Stand, Panic Room, Bringing Out the Dead, Three Men and a Baby, Cruising, the Black Hole, Blown Away (1993), Cheerleader Camp, the Watcher in the Woods, Wonder Boys, Survival Quest, Shoot to Kill...

100% agree! It's nice to know at least one other fan feels this way.

Alien/Aliens is a perfect comparison with the first two. 3 is fun if too silly at times while I appreciate 4 for the darker mood and how it delves into the origin of The Tall Man and brings back the surrealism of the first two. But 5 is a film I almost hesitate to even count as canon.

For those that held off buying the Well Go & Arrow collections because all they wanted were separate releases of Lord of the Dead & Oblivion, Target has them both up for pre-order, due out on 9/18/18.
