http://www.gamespot.com/news/npd-dea...bruary-6405361 The NPDs are out and this game didnt do all that great. While 5th on the list, it sold less than 260K |

it looks even worse when you compare it to MGS IV. I hope they didnt set their expectations too high though bc those numbers are pretty dissapointing especially compared to that game. MGS4 did 1.3 million worldwide on its first day and 776K in the NPDs for that month. Remember that it was only released on the PS3 and this was back in 2008 when the userbase was relatively small. 5 years later, MGR comes out on both platforms, both of which have large userbases now and it does less than a third of that. Hopefully the EU numbers are better

I thought it was a great game for MGS fans ... I don't play many "hack n slash" games so if its similar to a bunch of other games I wouldn't have noticed ... I'm on my second playthru now!!!

I finally played through and completed Metal Gear Rising and overall I didnt really like it. It didnt feel like Metal Gear to me. And before anyone goes and mentions the gameplay, I wasnt expecting it to be a stealth game like Solid. MG was more than just the gameplay to me. It was the story, characters, universe, environments, etc... and well all that fell lacking here.
The story was boring. The old games would have hours worth of cutscenes but I didnt mind that as I was enthralled by the story and lore that Kojima was presenting. It always kept me interested to find out more. Rising felt bland and honestly dont even remember it all that much despite just playing it. Felt more like something slapped on to get Raiden from point A to B. Im kinda grateful there arent many cutscenes in the game as I can see myself being pretty bored by them. I wasnt really feeling any of the new characters. All pretty forgettable and dont hold a candle to the previous supporting casts. I kinda wish Sunny had appeared earlier bc that would have at least been one familiar face. I also didnt really care for Raiden's characterization here. I dont think I ever really felt anything for him throughout this or by the end of it. Honestly he could have been a brand new cyborg ninja thrust into this role as nothing screamed Raiden to me Gameplay felt better for me since the demo, especially since I now understand the parry mechanics and can effectively use that. Ditto on the cutting. This game has a bit of a steep learning curve but once you get it, it works well. Ive already mentioned the graphics before but yeah it still bothers me that this game doesnt look nearly as good as MGS4 which was released 5 years earlier. Game also felt fairly short. When I saw it would have 7 missions, I thought they would at least be 7 long ones but I think my final game clock was roughly 6 hours. Plus that was with going for the trophies, searching for the collectibles and such so Id imagine that number would be significantly shorter if I didnt care about that stuff I guess i can see why they made this post-MGS4 as by doing so it doesn't really affect the canon of the titles which came before it. It was a decent experiment but I dont really care if this gets a sequel. If I had to review it, Id give it a 7. |
