Just rented this. Pretty fair film and I sure wish Turbo made more money than The Croods - why did this film make so much money? Was it because there was no other kid's film to see for weeks?

The animation was real crude and I couldnt get used to their squishes down faces - it was like watching a movie with the wide zoom mode turned on.

The animation was crude? I thought it was very fluid and beautifully done. Now, if you're talking about the human character designs, I definitely agree, as they were one of my main complaints with the film. Although, I admit that the designs have grown on me. (Though that still doesn't make them good.)

I really would have loved to see Chris Sanders' human character designs come to life. Such a waste having him direct the film without his designs being used. His creature designs obviously translated really well into CG; I'm sure his human designs would have too. And they would have been much easier on the eyes.

As for why it made so much money, it probably did have a lot to do with being the only animated family film at the time. Though I thought it was quite a charming film (i.e. I loved it), so I'd like to argue that it charmed its way up to its high box office gross.

For me the character design for The Croods was one of the best parts. Much like "UP" was for Pixar, this wasn't the more or less predictable Dreamworks look. I'm glad when they do something out of the box like this. The continuation of this style was noticeable in the big lines and the little details. And ... the way I see it, there's something cavemen-ish about it, that was the whole point. Much like the Disney Classic "Hercules", where the style was full of Greek influences. Perfect choice.

I do agree that the character design isn't "pretty". And because of that, I do admit that I wasn't interested in this animation at first. But this wouldn't work if any of the characters were "attractive" They are CAVEMAN. They are not human - homo sapiens. They are not supposed to look like typical pretty "human" characters.

My worry about "ugly" character design was not a factor as soon as the movie started. The animation is Beautiful!!! Most of all, the story and character development were fantastic. It didnt feel like it catered mostly to younger viewers like the Ice Age series. it was smart, funny and had heart. Great family film. Also 3D effects were great. Most pleasant surprise of the year for me, and one of the best movie of the year.

It's true they are not homo sapiens, so perhaps my use of "human" to describe them was incorrect, though I think you catch my drift. I definitely did feel that their "ugly" designs could have had to do with them being cavemen, but then again, Guy didn't have a particularly appealing design either, and I believe he is supposed to be a homo sapien. I believe you can have "ugly," primitive characters and still have the designs be "appealing."

In the end, though, it is just a personal gripe. And I may be especially biased because I love Chris Sanders' designs.

But my opinion on the designs doesn't make me any less of a fan. The rest of the film was utterly beautiful in every way. It is definitely DreamWorks' best looking film to date. I had a few minor gripes with the story as well, but overall, it met my high expectations, and it is actually my favorite film so far this year.

I know there's a topic for the sequel, but I can't find it...

Universal, the new big boss, cancelled The Croods 2. It was already in early stage of development and the DreamWorks Animation crew that was working on it, will have to move around and find a new job with another DreamWorks project.

Strange ... The Croods was a solid hit and the crew stated they were working on something great, defending the sequel to the very end.

Why would Universal cancel it? Doesn't FOX own DreamWorks?

So that's odd there.

I see Universal just bought DreamWorks Animation. The original made a little $600 million. You think that this would be a go.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Kill ‘Croods 2’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Quote:
DreamWorks Animation and its new parent, Universal Studios, have pulled the plug on the long-gestating sequel to the 2013 hit “The Croods.”

Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley met with workers at DreamWorks Animation’s Glendale headquarters Thursday to confirm that production of “The Croods 2” was being stopped immediately.

Some 30 employees who have been working on the film, launched 3 1/2 years ago, will be looking for new jobs. The workers were told DreamWorks Animation hopes to keep them at the company. Some could be shifted to other film projects, while others might be put into training or “artistic development” programs, according to an individual at Universal, who asked not to be named.

The initial “Croods” film charmed audiences with the tale of a family that deals with problems small (gathering food) and large (the impending destruction of the world.) It made $587 million worldwide at the box office, on a production budget of $135 million.

When Comcast bought DreamWorks Animation in April of this year, it put the hierarchy at Universal Studios in charge of the toon studio founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg. Individuals at both DreamWorks and Universal said doubts had been raised about proceeding with “Croods 2″ even before Universal was put in charge. Two sources said that Universal was effectively just ratifying a decision already made by DreamWorks Animation to kill the movie.

Trouble was already evident in August, when the companies announced that an expected 2017 release would be pushed back into 2018.

There are no near-term plans to bring back the prehistoric family, voiced in the original by Nicolas Cage, Catherine Keener and Emma Stone. But said the source at Universal: ” ‘The Croods’ is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It’s not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future.”

Biggest Jennifer Lawrence fan! I've written a comedy Life As Liz with Jen in mind as the lead. PM If your interested. I've written 15 feature length scripts.

Passengers arrives 12/21/16 - Which is in 18 days.

"I can't accept that I'm crazy" - Jen from an appearance on David Letterman. I feel the same too.

I have no problems with this whatsoever. It's not like it felt like it demanded a sequel. It was a really good stand alone film, and having it be left that way is a-ok for me.

I read there were production troubles. I'm kind of glad they cancelled it, I'd rather they work on something new. The Croods was a neat idea, but one film (and a Netflix tv series) was more than enough.

I'm also guessing getting the voice cast back too was a problem.

I'm not a big fan of sequels, but I was actually kinda looking forward to this. I thought there was potential to expand the world with a sequel.

Well, as long as Chris Sanders can get working on something else soon...

It's a shame. I wasn't looking forward to The Croods, but once it hit Blu-ray I gave it a shot, and enjoyed it very much. I would've loved to see a further exploration of this beautiful world. I guess Universal's other animation studios (Laika, DreamWorks) are on the side like these damn minions and secret pets.

The Croods was perfectly enjoyable, but not EVERY animated movie needs a franchise built around it.
