DVD Beaver review - Gary notes that they used the MPEG-2 codec, not VC-1, unlike Dark Night of the Scarecrow, which looked beautiful. I know nothing about the subject, is MPEG-2 a cheaper choice? You'd think with all the effort that went into the packaging and extras that they'd want to ensure that the transfer looked the best it could.

Unless I got a different release there is nothing special about this packaging. They didn't even include a booklet.

I guess I meant the overall presentation, although a booklet would have been cool, as Scarecrow had one.

I have always loved this flick and this is by far and away the best it has ever looked despite the horrendous use of the "optical" fog that looks so fake. What really stands out is the cinematography by Freddie Young during the destruction of London. The lighting works so well with the models, which look very good and the creature suits are well-done (be sure to check out the extras, which are fantastic, and see the suit that was worn by the stunt person that had the feet cut off because they were too heavy when walking through water. a funny photo). Loved the music as well and who doesn't like that touching ending. Lourie said in an interview that he always wanted to make a film like this where the monster would win and he certainly did. There is a great write up of Gorgo in Bill Warren's two volume anthology on 1950's sci/fi films Keep Watching The Skies.

I just finished watching my VCI Entertainment Blu-ray of Gorgo.

Gorgo, the United Kingdom answer to Godzilla, tells the story of salvage ship sailers who come across a volcanic eruption off the coast of Ireland and encounter a massive 65-foot-tall sea monster. Like any other rational scientifically-minded people, they instantly decide to capture the monster in nets, transport it by ship to London, and make a lot of money by selling it to a circus. The creature is named "Gorgo" by the circus owners, and is placed in an arena exhibition, where it is shown to sellout crowds on a nightly basis.

Unbeknownst to these people, however, Gorgo is merely an infant specimen of its species, Gorgo has a much larger mother, and Gorgo's mother is pissed.

Gorgo's 200-foot-tall mother stomps ashore in London, and tears its way across the city to rescue its son. Gorgo and its mother are happily reunited, and the human characters learn a heartwarming lesson about nature and ecology, but not before thousands of Londoners have been horrifically killed, all of London's major landmarks have been completely destroyed, and the entire city has been turned into a smoldering wreck of ashes and devastation.

When it comes to movies about giant mentally-unbalanced monsters destroying major cities, Gorgo is one of the best. This film, which benefits from the cinematography of Freddie Young, who also shot Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, features long sequences of glorious destruction, instead of showing us mere short glimpses of the creature like many such monster movies do. The music score is also quite good.

This VCI Entertainment Blu-ray sports an impressive presentation, considering the source material. There are imperfections, but my guess is that they are mainly due to what the studio had to work with, and none of the flaws interfered with my enjoyment of the film. The audio quality is pretty good to boot.

The extra features, which I'm going through now, are quite generous and informative. I'm loving the half hour documentary. The comic is also great to see.
