Thanks, Bullseye! And for the gallery comment. Gonna have to update that gallery now, it skipped right over the VPL40 stage and right into the Samsung JS stage.

Brief update -

Today I sold and shipped my VPL-HW40. End of a - brief - era. I'm on a month now of enjoying my Sammy 65" 4K, and I don't regret anything.

I can't wait to get back into projection systems at another place, whenever I move out of this one.

Gratz JJ on selling the Projector, I am seriously thinking of going 4K, What kills me is your model is not available in Canada

I would have to buy something even more expensive to get what would satisfy me, i want a 65" as well, also wish I had the room for projector but that's not going to happen until I get a new place and it's not now, maybe in a few years.

Just checked Canadian Sammy website again and turns out it now in Canada, Go figure That's pretty much the TV I would go for, I shall ask my dealer as they sell Samsung.

Well, I just renewed my lease and by the time it expires, I'll have lived here for 5 years. I'll be 29, the missus will be 30, and we'll probably be engaged - and this condo still has the echoes of my bachelor pad and is no place to raise kids and stuff.

So what happens in 2016 is up in the air. Might get a house again. But that room NEEDS to have a dedicated room for a projector. Be it a garage, florida room or a bedroom I can convert.

But for this condo, a TV is the only solution. And yes, 4K HDR is noticeable at my 7'6" seating distance versus 1080p. To find a LED LCD that compares to our Panny Plasmas, you would have to spend at least $3,000; and even then you'd be compromising - there would be pros/cons versus your current display.

But I've finally made my peace with my displays.

Thank you JJ, the JS8500 looks interesting if I consider upgrading from a 55 to a 65 and also I would be getting 4K and not to mention I sit approximately at the same distance as you .

We shall see...

Well, I've completed the "Goes 4K" part of my thread!

To be honest, I'm surprised that I don't see any of the regulars here from the HT forums over in the 4K section. Or are you fellas not the early adopter type? Will my blood and sweat pave the way for your enjoyment in a year or so?

Or you're not bothering with 4K at all?

Hey there JJ, good to hear from you. It's going to be awhile until I jump into the UHD 4K sea. Heck I think we spend as much time, or more, talking vintage and stereo as we do HT around these parts. Please post back on how you like the upgrade so that I may live vicariously through the "Life of JJ".

tho my tv isn't 4K, it Is fairly new (late 2014 Sharp 3D Aquos), I've watched 2 Mastered in 4K movies (LEON: The Professional, and THE FIFTH ELEMENT), both of which looked F__CKIN' FANTASTIC (!!!!!!!!), and Beyond Vivid in the detail on both. It was like going from 1994 SD on a Tube TV to a Brand New 1080p+ HD presentation. Seriously, it was like looking thru glass watching a movie unfold in front of you. You've never seen movies THIS CRYSTAL CLEAR before. I could only imagine seeing them on a 4K BD player and TV

I think a lot of us are just waiting for the prices to fall and for Oppo to release a dedicated 4k player. I was in Magnolia a few weeks back and the big OLED 4K's they had were just stunning. But prices ranged from 5 g's on the low end to 20+. Waaaay to steep for me.

Congrats on the future spouse.

Well, my brief snippets from 30-45mins of playing with the two 4K movies I own:

I'll reiterate what others have said - it's not as night and day as the difference from Bluray to DVD. It is noticeable - but it's not the resolution that jumps out at you at first. Details have even more pop, but it's usually the minute ones - text on computers, fibers on clothes, etc.

It's the cotdamb High Dynamic Range that blew me away like I thought it would. There's nothing like it. Especially in the "Kingsman" - the extra detail the HDR brings out is just...whew. It gives it a quality that's difficult to explain unless you've seen it, and to me, the biggest selling point difference over regular HD.

I'll have additional thoughts after watching movies all the way through this weekend. It's a solid player, and we know how poopy early Samsung BDPs were in the early years of blu-ray. This does not seem to be the case so far for this guy.

Ohhh...and you haven't seen HDR yet. Brace yourself.

Well, if my 65ZT60 hadn't died, I wouldn't even be here. I know it's blasphemous in these parts to mutter the word "LED LCD" but the $3k from Panasonic paid for the 65JS8500. And let me tell you, short of black levels (which I now compensate for using 6500K bias lighting, replaced my IKEA strip lights) - it's an amazing image in comparison. Add 4K res and HDR, and I'm never looking back.

I'd love to go OLED, but I'll save that for my next TV in 3-4 years. And Oppo is QUITE a ways away from that, but I'll beta test these players for everyone interested in picking one up, =)
