If the injuries keep piling up for the Hawks, they'll be lucky to make the playoffs

Just watch. The Lakers will barely miss the playoffs, and then win the lottery to get the #1 overall pick.

Would there be anything better to continue to fuel the "Lotto is rigged!" stuff?

It's only rigged if you're owned by Stern. Thanks again for Anthony Davis!

Love this story. We've always seen that guy before on an NBA bench that looks like he really doesn't belong. Brian Scalabrine got pissed at his reputation and challenged the best of Boston's amateurs to 1 on 1. The four best players got to play him. Nice to see Scalabrine put these myths to rest. The winner was given a "White Mamba" trophy.

Quote:
Listeners sent in their try-out videos, showing off their skills and talking some trash towards Scal, but it turns out even Boston’s best was no match for Scalabrine. [...]

It became very clear very quickly that Scalabrine was on another level from these athletes. Even against decent competition — the first challenger, Matt Tomaszewski, was on Syracuse's roster just last season — Scalabrine owned everyone. The second and third games were both shutouts, and the six points scored included one two-pointer. In four games, Scalabrine conceded just five baskets.

Scalabrine — who spent the last few seasons of his career seen as the “human victory cigar” — easily defeated all four of his opponents, throwing down monstrous jams and sinking smooth jumpers as he beat them all by a combined score of 44-6 in games to 11.

The Lakers don't have their first round pick this year. If they miss the playoffs it will go to the Suns, and if they make the playoffs the Cavs have the option of swapping Miami's first round pick for the Lakers pick, and then the Suns would get Miami's pick from the Lakers.

Is it not lottery protected?

And the Wizards will have the worst record and get the #5 pick
Because it's easier to have courage from a safe distance away.

The Lakers pick is not protected in any way. If it is a lottery pick the Suns get it. If it is outside the lottery the Cavs have the option to swap their own pick, the Kings top-3 protected pick, or the Heat's top-10 protected pick for the Lakers pick. Since it's clear the Cavs and Kings aren't playoff teams the only realistic swap would be trading the Heat's pick for the Lakers (if they made the playoffs) and then the Suns would get the Heat's pick.

Stuff like this is why it's so laughable when people talk about how a great college team could easily beat the worst NBA team.

The web site prosportstransactions.com say that the pick is top 14 protected, period. So the Suns can only get the pick if it is not a lottery and the Cavs choose a different pick.

Do you have a source for it being unprotected?

*EDIT* Ok, I found an LA Times article which says the opposite, and says just what you did. This crap is complicated.

exactly. If you read some articles the other players all said they couldn't believe how fast Scalabrine was. The pro level is so high that they're almost playing a different sport than everyone else. I love going to an NBA game and getting to my seat as soon as the doors open. The players are out there warming up and doing drills. Even guys that I don't think of as shooters are nailing 12 in a row from 18 feet. And watching the 3pt specialists warm up is insane.

Now i will admit that for a brief moment when i was a teenager i thought i could take Bill Wennington, but i'm guessing i was wrong.

It might have been possible in the pre-90's era when the best college basketball teams were loaded with 20 and 21 year olds who were future NBA stars to hang with an NBA team. But these days with the best players playing 1 or 2 years the Bobcats or Pistons would crush any of them.

Some of those early 90s Duke teams probably could have. No egos and just complete teamwork.

And the UNLV teams of 1990-91 with Larry Johnson, Augmon, Anthony and several other future solid NBA players were outstanding. When Duke beat them in the national Semifinal it was considered a big upset.

+1

those UNLV teams were the scariest college teams i've ever seen. They were like a mature fab five. It's crazy how being a senior in college is a bad thing now.

And remember who had the #2 pick in 1985? The Indiana Pacers of all teams. It wasn't exactly a longshot for the Knicks to win the lottery that year. They had a 14% chance as the system was then.

We are officially announcing "the Pelicans" tomorrow

Quote:
The team's new colors are expected to be blue, gold and red, which are favored by Gayle Benson, the owner's wife, and the changes are to go into effect next season.

Benson had registered the name Pelicans along with Krewe and a number of others with the league office, NBA Commissioner David Stern said when he visited the city on Dec. 5 to check the progress of the team's new practice facility, which is located near the Saints' facility on Airline Drive.

Stern said then he had no druthers concerning a name change or if it stayed the same, jokingly asking if there were any lakes in Los Angeles or jazz in Utah.

Michael Jordan, owner of Charlotte's current NBA team, the Bobcats, has said he is interested in claiming Hornets, if Benson changes the name of New Orleans' franchise. Hornets pertains to a military unit's bravery in the Charlotte's history.
if MJ takes back the Hornets name then we'll have even more of a mess with team history/stats. Kings/Sonics/Thunder and Hornets/Pelicans/Bobcats. Sounds like fun!
