If not Black Friday, maybe right before the release of The Desolation Of Smaug.

I don't know, but I went for it at the currect sale price of $30. Not likely to get lower than that any time soon, except possibly black Friday, but I couldn't wait that long.

As far as the EE goes, I'm a little disappointed it was only 13 minutes of footage added, from the hours and hours of shot footage they have on these movies. I mean, if you're going to make an extended cut of a movie that is already 3 hours long, EXTEND it, ffs. The ADD's who already hate long movies aren't going to like it anyway, this is for the "can't get enough Tolkien" crowd. The more the merrier.
A cast commentary would have been golden too, with this troop.
kakistocracy (kak·is·toc·ra·cy) [kak-uh-stok-ruh-see]
noun, plural: kak·is·toc·ra·cies.
Government by the worst persons; a form of government in which the worst persons are in power; government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.
Origin: 1820–30; < Greek kákisto ( s ), superlative of kakós bad + -cracy

I agree for the most part. I don't mind the length of the cut, this movie tended to drag a bit anyway and all the new scenes are enjoyable for me. I am disappointed in the bonus material. Strange to say since there's so much but I noticed some of it is repetitive and they don't spend nearly enough time on the post production aspect. Nothing really about shooting in 3D or at 48fps, glosses over the design elements.
The LOTR appendices were so top notch that my expectations for this were very high.
I enjoyed all 9+ hours but part of me was left thinking it could've been so much better,
All 3D reviews should list the equipment it was viewed on.

Are the extended parts of the movie in 3D? The review on here says

Quote:
The 3D Extended Edition set includes five BD-50 discs: two for the 3D version of the 183-minute feature film (with a break midway through the extended cut), one for the 2D version of the EE (with no breaks or disc swaps to be had), and two more discs devoted to nine hours of HD bonus content.
Don't want to buy this if the EE is only in 2D.

Since it was all originally shot in 3d, no worries there, unlike WWZ and Wolverine, where they didn't bother converting the extra footage.

I damn near jumped once or twice and it left me even more impressed then before.
Thanks for that info, it helps.
13 minutes extra is pretty good IMO, but compared to Return of the King's extended version, which was about 35 minutes maybe?

Even so, of the 13 minutes, how much were action scenes? Thanks!
Can't wait to check out Hobbit 2 3D December 13, a little more than a month away.

I watched this last night and I thought it was great. The extra footage is good, the movie is terrific, and it looks fantastic. I don't normally like 29.99 for a 3D title but this was well worth it.

I haven't looked at any of the special features but the price is worth it for the movie alone. But this was a worthy pick up even at the higher price!

Went to watch the commentary last night only to discover that it is included only on the 2D disc!
Several minutes of swearing and cursing Best Buy ensued and I am now going to sell my POS steelbook and go get the full 5 disc set.
Bad form BB, bad form.

I'm pretty sure the commentary track is only on the 2D disc on every edition of this movie.

I know, that was the point of my rant. I did not know until I had purchased the 3D only steelbook.

I too purchased the BBY Steelbook and now in the process of finding a decent price for the 2D disc...don't want to buy the whole 2D set just for the missing commentary.

No issues watched the 3D version in 2D.

But, I ended up watching the extended version in 3D. I have to say, I was rather impressed. Not a lot of "in your face" type of stuff, but a lot of depth/layers and spatial scenes which gave the movie and many scenes real impact. Very nice 3D, overall.

The extended 3D version of this went down to $28.99 for the Canadian folk on Amazon. It's been at $44 for ever. Don't know how long it'll last though.
