This is what I remember as well after several viewings. The galaxy photography was taken from a 2D source and via computer computation each star was given its known distance and its image placed on the virtual grid for an accurate simulation of space-travel movement in real-time.

Madgascar IMAX 3D is also very visually impressive, your in for a treat when that hits theatres in April

and to clarify one point, not all of the 'Born to be Wild' was 15/70 - new IMAX cameras were made and filmed certain scenes as digital 4K capturing/photography.
Thanks. I'll put the Blu-ray in my wishlist. Hopefully the price drops.

And about the digital photography in 'Born to be Wild', I knew about that. Shot using two Phantom 65 Gold Cameras. But it otherwise accounts for maybe 10% of the entire documentary. That's about 4 minutes. This same camera was used in Transformers Age of Extinction.

According to the special features, the cameras were used to capture very spontaneous animal activity, so I probably have an idea when it was used. But otherwise, at least on Blu-ray, the quality of both film and digital cameras were extremely high quality, it's difficult to tell the difference.

really? that I did not know - I thought the purpose of the new digital IMAX cameras was 1) it could record more and 2) it's lighter and is less noisy and wouldn't spook the animals since a lot was up close camera angles.

Born to be Wild used a work-in-progress prototype rig. The majority of the doc was still filmed in Dual Strip 70mm 3D. The special feature on the Blu-ray, I think it's named "Wild Filmmaking" has some insights to the filmmaking process. Talking about the challenges filming and some valuable footage with the digital camera.

I'm not saying your points are invalid. But in future documentaries, they might make very interesting documentaries with this cameras.

TF4 has the finalized version of the camera. Which also means, it will be the first time I'm watching a movie in Digital IMAX 3D since the rise of digital projection.

Imax Debuts 4K 3D Digital Camera on Transformers: Age of Extinction
http://nofilmschool.com/2014/06/imax...y/?hvid=1wAKmL

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX#3D_digital_camera
Quote:
In 2011, IMAX announced a 4K 3D digital camera with the similar wide resolution of regular IMAX film cameras. The camera was developed alongside Vision Research and AbelCine, integrating two Phantom 65 engines. A prototype camera was used for the documentary Born to be Wild, in which approximately 10% of the finished film was shot with the system. It has been said that the company has no intention of replacing the higher resolution film cameras with the new digital camera, but the latter can be used in scenes that require a lightweight or relatively small 3D camera in order to film it without issue. Currently while IMAX has completed the production camera and has been placed into service on several films, there are no plans to produce an IMAX film using solely the new digital system. The upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction will be filmed partially with the Phantom 65 IMAX 3D camera.

Default World Natural Heritage 3D Documentaries

I first saw these titles on Samsung's 3D TV app. I liked them very much but most of the time I had stop and go loading so I decided to buy them. The PQ is even better on disc and the colors are more saturated. I like these very much as they are saturated with good information. The 3D is great with some pop-outs. There are other films in the World Heritage library. One is mainly an under water documentary. I don't really care for under water docs but I hope they release more of the WNH films. I picked them up on Amazon.uk.

Too bad you don't like underwater documentaries. IMAX UNDER THE SEA, is among the best 3D Blu-ray discs in existence. Easily top 5.

Thanks for this tip. They sound very good. Amazon.co.uk says they are region B. If you are in region A can you verify that they play O.K.? Thanks.

I have an Oppo 103 that was modded for region free but even set to region A, these played. l contacted the film makers asking about other WNH films and was told that they are region free. I ordered the one on Hawaii from Amazon.de and I'm pretty sure it shows "free" for region. Let me check to be sure.

Thanks Paul. Imax has plenty of strong 3D in their films. I can imagine these will be just as good. Flight of the Butterflies could be something in strong 3D, with the butterflies floating out of the screen.

The underwater of the Whale documentary also, with the water.

saw A Beautiful Planet this afternoon - and while I was generally quite impressed - I thought considering most of the movie was overhead International Space Station photography of the earth, that aspect really didn't need to be in 3D, unless there was something in the foreground to convey depth. "inside" the space station though the 3D was no surprise and visually fun. Has anyone else seen this? thoughts?
