"First, a brief preface. Every time I review a film by Jean-Luc Godard, I receive outraged letters from readers who hated it. It is suggested that my reviews and myself join Godard on the trash heap of history; that the customers wuz robbed. A common complaint is that Godard 'made no sense.' And so on." -- Roger Ebert (1966)

A toss up between:
Psycho Strangers On A Train Frenzy
"Sherman Duffy of the New York Herald once said, "A newspaperman is the loneliest guy on earth. Socially he ranks somewhere between a hooker and a bartender. Spiritually he stands with Galileo, because he knows the world is round." - Carl Kolchak (The Night Stalker, 1972)

North by Northwest by a longshot
"Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from... but most of all we 'members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home."

Vertigo is not only my favourite Hitchcock movie, it's my favourite movie of all time. It's a film which only gets better and more mysterious with repeat viewings.
Hitchcock is the director who made me realise what film can do and who seriously got me interested in cinema. My dad gave me the book Truffaut Hitchcock and then I ended up trying to see all of his films from then on. There are a few of his silent movies I still haven't seen and the only sound film I'm missing is Walzes from Vienna. Among my other top favourites are Rear Window, Notorious, Shadow of a Doubt, North by Nortwest, Psycho, The Birds and among the more contentious choices Sabotage and Marnie. Over the last decade Marnie has become the film I go back to the most, thematically it's an interesting companion piece to Vertigo. I love Rebecca but it feels more like a Selznick than a Hitchcock film. Last edited by Todd Tomorrow; 07-30-2017 at 03:27 PM. |

Swap out Vertigo and add either Psycho or The Birds, or both, and that's me. I love North by Northwest and Rear Window. I swear Grace Kelly epitomizes glamour in the latter, but Eva Marie Saint is no slouch.
The Force, it's calling to you. Just let it in.
