I've never owned a subwoofer and currently only using a pair of B&W 685s.

The BIC PL-200 seems like a great deal at this point, but how does it compare with the Velodyne EQ-Max 15 Inch Subwoofer?

The BIC PL-200 can be had probably for $300 if you make an offer to AcousticSoundDesign on eBay and the Velodyne EQ-Max 15 inch subwoofer is currently $749.77 on their website.

I know the Velodyne is much more expensive and has better specs, but just how noticeable will all of that be? 250 Watts RMS Continuous with the BIC PL-200 vs 750 watts RMS Power with the Velodyne:

Why would you ask about velodyne and bic in the HSU owners thread?

Need questions answered.
How big is the room including all areas opened to the room in cubic feet (LxWxH)?
Will it be mostly for movies or music (50/50 or 70/30)?

I am a big proponent of saving for then buying the best subwoofer you can afford. Most subs under $500 are OK for use in small rooms like bedrooms but fall short of performance (output and accuracy/precision) when used in a HT room.

I'm not exactly sure but let's say 18X20X10. I will mostly be using it for video games 60% and movies 40%.

My dad is looking for a new sub. He currently has the Acoustic Research ARS500 which is crapping out. Room dimensions are around 24' x 24' x 10'. Not 100% sure on those dimensions, but they're estimates.

He is interested in the BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer. Would that even be enough for the room?

I told him to get the HSU VTF-15H, Maybe that is overkill.

What do you guys think? He will be using it for about 70% music, 30% movies.

HSU's are very musical subs. I enjoy my VTF-1 immensely.

3600^3 is a good sized room. Since you will not be listening to music that much you could be able to get by with the BIC. But if you go with the Bic you would probably need two of them if you really want to have some punch from the subs. And you really need to be honest with yourself. It looks to me like you just listed the dimension of your room but again is it open to a kitchen or a hallway etc.? Because when figuring out how much subwoofer you need to be able to get to reference levels all of the open spaces must be taken into consideration.

You are totally correct in your recommendation. At least one VTF-15 and tell him that once he gets one he will surely want a second one. 5600^3 space is a large space and can easily handle 2 of the VTF without being overkill. I lot of ppl do not realize that when you add multiple subs it does not get louder in a room the bass gets smoother. When you add multiples you actually have to turn down the gains on the subs so they still will output around 75dB and has the added benefit of the subs amplifiers lasting longer since they as a pair don't have to work as hard.

No, it's actually going to be a for a bedroom so the door will be closed and there's no open spaces. The bedroom really isn't that big.

You can always ask, but as far as I know, he only offers the discount on the ULS-15, which I own, if you buy multiples at the same time.

You must live in a mansion then. 18X20X10 is bigger than my Master Bedroom. I'm just playing around. Anyway, if it was me I would choose the Velodyne over the Bic. The Velodyne will work both in the bedroom and if you think you might move it later in another larger room it should work there too.
