To my eyes the Rocky remaster had nothing of the watercolour filter-looking nastiness inflicted on the Optimum release of DLK, but then I'm only watching on a mere 55". I've got both the old and new Rocky discs and did some A/B comparing when I got them, I noticed nothing untoward with the grain on the new one then either, when you'd think it would stand out more, flicking from one to the other.

I need a bit of clarification.

Are the English Dolby Digital tracks on Rocky's 1-5 the original mono & stereo mixes and if anyone has compared them how tastefully done are the 5.1 mixes of said films?
Life's a piece of s**t when you look at it.

Yes, they're the original mixes AFAIK. I can't speak for the 5.1 as the last time I watched these movies I stuck to the original audio only. (MGM's mono to multichannel upmixes have a habit of sucking balls)

Sad. Just got finished watching Rocky I & II last couple nights in preparation of Creed's release next Tuesday. Tony's performance is great in these movies. Wish he could have played a part in the new Creed film.

"Nobody said nuthin' 'bout the cholo!!" is a classic line that I still drop at random, completely out of the blue on unsuspecting innocent bystanders in real life.

I think Rocky 5 and 6 would've been better with more Duke. In 5 he basically disappears after the first 10 minutes, and in 6 he only shows up at the end. Rocky 4 is my favorite movie, and part of the reason was Duke's managing. NO PAIN!! NO PAIN!!

I've watched Rocky 4 at least 1000 times in my life (born in 84' so there is no life before Rocky 4. No idea when I saw it first), and I STILL get goosebumps before the training montage when he says "You know what you gotta do. Do it. Do it." and the guitar riff kicks in.

RIP Tony. You were the most entertaining trainer to stand in Rocky's corner.

If I was interested in picking up a stand alone release of the original Rocky, which one should I get?

I saw a used copy of the digibook in a shop the other day and it looked pretty cool...but that's not the remastered version right?

Does remastered version look a lot better?
Like new Criterion Yi Yi - $14...($2.50 for shipping).
Looking to trade for one of the following:
-The BRD Trilogy
-Le Doulos
-The Human Condition
-Berlin Alexanderplatz
...have other Criterions available for trade listed on Criterion trade thread.

This is $8 at Best Buy and Walmart and has a slipcover (if that tickles your pickle):

You may also find this one (same thing as above sans cardboard):

The 40th Anniversary edition is the same remastered version that is in the Heavyweight set. It looks incredible. Much better than the older version that came in the Undisputed set (I've owned and watched both).

The remastered edition came out 3 years after the digibook. No, it isn't the same transfer.

See comparisons:

I just got done watching the last half of Rocky III on the IFC network.

It certainly is a fun movie.

And yet watching it for the first time in many years I was reminded of the fact that the idea of Rocky Balboa, a brawler completely devoid any shred of athletic ability, somehow transforming himself into Sugar Ray Leonard in the span of three months or so is arguably THEE dumbest, most asinine plot development in the history of motion pictures.

I'm sorry...but it's true.

Not to mention beating Apollo Creed in a beach sprint just a few weeks after repeatedly losing by about 20 yards every time.

You shut your face, Rocky and Apollo embracing each other on a beach in short shorts is one of the best moments in film history.
Escape From New York Scream Factory
It improves upon the A/V quality of the previous MGM Blu-ray, preserves the best of the 2003 DVD extras, and adds great new material too. Donít miss it!

The entire premise is far fetched. There's ridiculous and cheesy things in pretty much all the Rocky's, but that's their charm.
They were a product of their time. I mean, there's no way a film like Rocky III or IV would be made like that today! They'd be comedies!! You see how boxing films of today are; way more serious. Cinderella Man, Southpaw, and Creed. They're completely different.

Rocky 3 and 4 are like the "fun" Tim Burton Batman movies of yesteryear, while Cinderella Man, Southpaw and Creed are like the "serious" Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

The nostalgia, for us, associated with Rocky 3 and 4 is so amazing, that we all cant help but love em to this day! But show an 18 year old those movies today. They'll say they're cheesy.

Dare I say it - but said 18 year old may even take Rocky 5 more seriously than 3 and 4.

Never got any info on this. Lotta comments of 3&4, nothing on 2. I always thought it was sorta part 2 of 1 since he lost but came back to win. A little help?
