In other words, I cannot get rid of the letterboxing format no matter how I set up the player. I thought that with a wide-screen LCD TV, you could fill the entire screen with the picture, and still maintain the correct aspect ratio without letterboxing. What am I doing wrong?
Your television has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 whereas, to use your example, L.A. Confidential has an aspect ratio of 2.40:1. Any title which doesn't have a native aspect ratio of 1.78:1 will be either letterboxed or pillarboxed. You can't "fill" the entire screen of your television with these titles and still maintain the correct aspect ratio. Doing so would either cut off the top/bottom or left/right sides of the picture thus changing the aspect ratio.

EDIT: After reading those threads, you may be able to "fill" your screen by zooming in on the picture through a setting on your television.

Default Creating a 3D Blue Ray disc

How can one create a 3D Blue Ray disc with some software? I have 3D content and I want to create a true 3D disc that can play on my Samsung 3D TV.

Default BDX3300 and would like to access Amazon Instant Video

I have a BDX3300 and would like to access Amazon Instant Video from it if possible. AIV is not supported natively on this player. I have the BDX3300 connected to my wireless network.

If there a solution available, using my PC as a DNLA server or something like that? Any pointers or suggestions will be much appreciated - thanks!
