The discs are the same, new distributor.

As said in this thread before... the Blu-ray was already nearly finished when Criterion requested to add it to their library. Thus, it is the only Paramount Criterion release to feature multiple language options and a standard keepcase. All other Paramount films handled by Criterion use the clear "thick" case and language opions are very limited to the original audio with optional English subtitles.

If it was nearly finished, why not scratch the original and start from scratch? This never got the 4k finish, right? They could have done their own transfer in place of the other. It s a waste to take a standard version and just stick a Criterion log on it. Really, it isn't a true Criterion release in my view.

I agree. It seems more like a Paramount release, with the Criterion logo and spine number added as an afterthought. It even has a Paramount UPC code and Proof of Purchase number like every other Parmount release. On top of that, it was distributed by Paramount.

When Paramount and Criterion struck their 10 film deal in 2009, the contract specified that one of the films had to be a recent title. And since Criterion's work in restorations isn't cheap, they went for the money title (which was this one).

Their choice of film has a lot more to do with Criterion's long working relationship with David Fincher than anything else.

But it grossed over $100 million and had 13 Oscar nominations (winning for its Visual Effects and Makeup). If you want a title to finance riskier projects, this was the one to take.

The Warner release is visually identical to the Paramount one, and is still completely branded as Criterion. I saw both at Walmart, where it's is currently $5.00 (Warner release identified by a non-sticker UPC with their logo). The color is slightly different though (probably not intentional, but noticeable when you hold them side-by-side).

I hope so as well, I picked it up for $7.88 about 4 months ago. It's a great deal for such an ambitious movie.
