for these reasons:
1) it seems it has better depiction of grain but I wasn't sure if this was due to sharpening
2) better detail due to different colors/contrast
i mean here for example you lose some details:

3) Colors closer to what I remember at the theater

Still I wonder, if we could have an anniversary edition in 2017 and I would be willing to wait, if there is a 4K scan.
Yep, I prefer the US re-mastered version as well.

Asked a question about the Japanese version in the Asian forum and nobody responded. Anyone own it?

The latest JP reissue then yes I do. As said before it's the best version of "gaumont" version. Less grain, more color and such. Own both, not sure what I prefer though. Both have strong points. I like the sharp and realistic tone of the US remaster but also the new more filmic/colorful version and that is said to be the way Besson prefers it. Not that I choose my movie for that but just a note.

It's really strange how a version that has less grain, can be considered more filmic!
To me, filmic look is attached to grain.
Most wanted Blurays: All classic Disney animation films restored to their original look (with grain), without any re-imagining, Raintree County, Star Wars OT, Spacecamp, Spacehunter: adventures in the forbidden zone, Maurice, Explorers, Runaway, Mayerling, Supergirl, True Lies, Abyss, King Solomon's Mines, The Philadelphia Experiment (1984), Who's that Girl, Madonna Blond Ambition Tour
Foreign films: Sissi Trilogy, Death in Venice, Raise the Red Lantern, Cyrano, Indochine, Farewell my Concubine

I don't see significantly less grain in the other version. I see significantly less sharpening.

In any case, I was just wondering if there were any parts in the film with alien languages that need to be subtitled -- I can't remember -- and whether or not the disc has any extras.

This film hasn't been given the respect it deserves on BD in the US. A good quality scan and all the extras.

VUDU has a UV redeem code for this movie. Did any version of this on BD come with a Sony UV code? Thanks.
